This SSF show featured Toronto’s KING JUDAH with MC Vybz, DJ Cornbread, T-Money, and Jeff…King Judah is a young sound from Scarborough who have already won a 45 clash (where dubs also had to be played) and
have achieved the respect from both friends and foes in Toronto’s vibrant Sound System fraternity. To date, they are the youngest sound to make an appearance on ReggaeMania Radio – Sound System Fridays. The night featured a presentation of dubs and 45’s, as this sound would not be drawn into the ‘all dubplate’ styled shows delivered by a few past sounds. According to King Judah, they are a building sound and they felt no shame about playing 45’s in this stage of the sound, knowing that the art still required skills from both selector and mic man. So what you will hear both musically and in conversation, is the true King Judah, a mature new generation thinking sound still humble, but, ready to bus’ when the time is right. Big Up MC Vybz and Kornbread and their guest – T. Money for a nice live performance. Enjoy the vibes
This SSF show featured DON RANKIN Sound with Photo Rankin + DJ Curry. Thanks to the live artists who passed through – Trinity Chris, Lindo P and Michie Mee… Don Rankin brought it last Friday Night – arriving
early and bringing their own machine. MC and Don Rankin President Fouti Rankin was first to select and play the sound, accompanied by his full-time selector Curry. The crew kept it easy, but, fast tempo for the first half-hour, after overcoming the turbulence, quickly steadied down to deliver one of the more entertaining shows seen on Sound System Fridays.
It wouldn’t come down to playing ‘all dubplates’ all night as some previous sounds had chosen to do. Instead, Don Rankin mixed high quality dubs with high impact 45’s and entertaining live speech. This was all topped up by great live performances by none other than Michie ‘Bahd Gyal’ Mee (her third time here), Lindo P. (his fourth time here ) and Trinity Chris (his first time here) not to mention the on stage style of energy and antics from Don Rankin member – Problem Child. He never stopped!
Congrats Don Rankin, you brought it to Sound System Fridays – your numbers were a testament to this (the overall viewers on Ustream eclipsed all previous record holders and you came close to tying King Turbo’s record for the highest steady viewership)!. Good luck in “Real Steel” Don Rankin! By the way…this Friday January 18th, Sound System Fridays welcomes Silverhawk Sound (Richie Poo) and LP International (Killa D) – make it a date!
This SSF show featured America’s LP International with DJ Killa D and Jamaica’s Silverhawk Sound with selector Richie Poo.. It was a pleasure to have two quality sounds grace our ReggaeMania Radio studio
for Sound System Fridays on January 18th – inside was Jamaica’s legendary Richie Poo representing Silverhawk Sound, alongside Killa D reppin’ LP International Sound out of Flatbush, NY. They were passing through as a prelude to the REAL STEEL event that was scheduled for Saturday night at Hickory House also featuring King Turbo (promoters of the event) and early warm-up by Don Rankin.
I was a little disappointed that the Sounds didn’t arrive to start playing at 9 PM, but, I sensed the promoters didn’t want to give away free ‘too much’ of what was to be expected the following night. A little over 90 minutes of Silverhawk Sound and LP International would have to suffice. I held it down with some creative juggling previous to these veteran sounds taking over the one’s and two’s.
It was time to ‘sound off’ – LP International touched down first, delivering some nice dubs and speech. It was clear, when questioned, that Killa D (LP International) would be up for anything and everything the following night including any war that might start in-between the REAL STEEL sets. Silverhawk took over and took us on a journey back in time with a selection of dubs designed to tease and please our listeners and viewers tuned into the broadcast. Richie Poo (Silverhawk) also stated that he was ready to defend tings too.
Golden Touch Sound gave me forty-five minutes notice that I would have to do the show without them due to the weather conditions. When I got the call from Dwight, he explained to me, that as a working man, working
a traditional 9 – 5 job downtown, it took him two and a half hours to get home, so, making the journey from Mississauga to Scarborough was not something that he could pull off – timing wise. I completely understood and told him to relax, stay home and we’ll reschedule him for a future date.
Having said that, I went to work with an attitude. The sounds are the draw on Sound System Fridays, not me. Now I was alone and had to play for three hours without much warning. By the end of the show, I was satisfied with my performance, but, it wasn’t until I listened to the archive that I discovered how good a show this was. Yeah, it was all about the 45’s for me – the mixing was good and the talking was kept to a minimum.
The only upsetting thing for me was the first ninety minutes of the show – it was totally distorted for the people tuning in on ReggaeMania.com, those listening on RMR.FM had no issues. I corrected the problem and can assure fans it won’t happen again. Next week, Lexus Superior out of Toronto and Washington, DC joins us for Sound System Fridays. Enjoy the Podcast!
