Meet Ron Nelson, a multifaceted talent who has made an indelible impact on the Canadian hip-hop scene. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Ron moved to Canada as a young child and has since proudly called Scarborough his home.

Throughout his life, he has worn many hats as a writer, producer-engineer, event organizer, public speaker, broadcaster, archivist, and now, a recording artist once again. But it was his trailblazing efforts in concert promotions during the 1980s and 90s that cemented his place in Canadian hip-hop history.

Renowned for having set the ‘Canadian Urban blueprint’, DJ Ron Nelson is Canada’s most influential promoter of early hip hop, hence why he is referred to as the ‘godfather’ of Canadian hip hop, a proud title he humbly accepts resulting from his 40-plus year contribution to the industry. Ron’s visionary approach played a pivotal role in shaping the genre’s emergence and growth, earning him well-deserved recognition and respect to this day. 

DJ Ron Nelson is an icon in Canadian music history, having pioneered the first hip-hop radio show on CKLN 88.1 FM. DJ Ron Nelson hosted and popularized two iconic CKLN radio shows, ‘The Fantastic Voyage’ and ‘Friday Night ReggaeMania’.

An artist, engineer and producer, DJ Ron Nelson built Apace Studios in the basement of his Toronto home, which served as Toronto’s first all-hip-hop recording space, and expanded to house the famed Beat Factory Studios. 

In 1988, DJ Ron Nelson released his first 12” single, the celebrated ‘B-Boy Destruction’. He then produced two songs, ‘Voyage Through The Multiverse’ and ‘Journey On’, off the Dream Warriors debut LP, ‘And Now The Legacy Begins’ for 4th & Broadway and Island Records.

With an impressive 40-year career, Ron’s contributions to the industry are immeasurable. He also is credited with promoting and elevating Canada’s sound clash culture to an international level in the late 90’s to post-2,000 era. His enduring legacy not only includes his invaluable contributions to music but also serves as inspiration for all those seeking to follow their dreams with determination and grit.
