NOVEMBER 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 11.01.13

This SSF show featured NOBLE WORKS Sound with DJ Doug Skillmore + Otis Gayle. Also on the show, XIXGON INTERNATIONAL with MC David and DJ Shai. Jesse Royal performs live… The downtown Reggae

vibe was brought uptown last Friday night for Sound System Fridays. Host Sounds – Noble Works and Xixgon International featured live performances by veteran Foundation artiste, Otis Gayle and one of Dancehall’s most cultured – rising artiste, Jesse Royal.

Things got underway just after 9 PM with Noble Works at the controls.  As a stranger to the downtown Reggae Scene, I had never heard of Noble Works previous to Deejay Shai’s (Xixgon International) request. Noble Works, to their credit, play out four nights a week where they showcase their talent and versatility by juggling various genre’s of music – Reggae, Hip-hop, R&B and Dance.

Noble Works held it down for their entire set, playing exclusively dubs and came close again when they returned to close the show after Xixgon’s prearranged early departure (Deejay Shai had Jesse Royal in town to promote IREMEMBER featuring Luciano alongside Royal).  Big Up Doug Skillmore and partner, Ian! These two put on a great show and were solid from start to finish – they dropped Foundation dubs and even surprised us with a special Foundation guest artiste – Otis Gayle of Byron Lee And The Dragonaires and Studio One fame. Not to mention, they saluted Canada by playing many Canadian artistes such as Blessed, Lindo P, Tonya P (who provided a custom Ron Nelson/Sound System Fridays dub), Gappy Ranks, Masicka, Randy Valentine, Million Styles (Sweden), Jahdaa Blakk, Mr. Williams (U.K.) and more.  I truly enjoyed Noble Works vibes, not bad for a two-year-old Sound!

Big Up Xixgon International for passing through! A talented and tight Sound that came out of Trinidad and Tobago that now reps worldwide. They came in and picked up where Noble Works left off. With MC David and DJ (Deejay) Shai at the controls, anything can happen. I noticed that Shai is not a very emotional person when it comes to the chunes that he plays – no smiling, no grooving, nuttin’! – I  guess he wants to focus on his craft and not get distracted. That didn’t stop him from layin’ down big, big dubs by big, big artistes – always a treat! Their set was flawless and it flowed – watch the show and see for yourself!  Once again, Big Up Xixgon International David, Shai, Yves, Crash, Casey and Andrew – Thanks for passing through, representing and for taking things to the next level!

Last but not least, Big Up to Jesse Royal! This was my first time meeting him and I was impressed with his words of wisdom – his levelheadedness. Mark my words, Jesse Royal will bus’, it’s only a matter of time. He is a great example of what the international Reggae scene needs right now – a fresh take on life and living from a creative and talented individual who is wise beyond his years.  We’ve seen a sample of what’s to come from this promising Cultural artiste – keep your eyes peeled and your ears pricked!  What a great show!  Enjoy the Podcast!

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 11.15.13

This SSF show featured EXTACY Sound with DJ Fadda Morris + Rankin Joe. Also on the show, DJ Scratchy B. repping his CASH MONEY Sound… This show was noice! – Fadda Morris played a selection of dubs and

singles that silenced the chat room massive. On this night, it wasn’t about the talking of the mic for Extacy Sound, it was about the music. I’m excited to hear what they’ll have in store in the future! Extacy Sound has the ability and potential to take it to the top – to become a Champion Sound, they just have to build their box. In the end, Fadda Morris gets a passing grade for his appearance on Sound System Fridays – a good start for Extacy Sound.

I also give Extacy credit for delivering on the live artiste front. It’s something we ask of every Sound who performs on Sound System Fridays. It was an honour to be up close and personal with veteran Foundation artiste Ranking Joe who was in town to voice dubs! This man has so much history and getting a performance out of him was nothing short of magical, not to mention, historic. Extacy proved that they have serious links inna dis ya Dancehall business!

I also want to Big Up DJ Scratchie B of Cash Money Sound who passed through courtesy of ScottySupa Loaded! Overall, he played alright considering he came directly to the ReggaeMania studio from Pearson International. I don’t think he knew much about Sound System Fridays – what the show stands for (dub plate and Sound clash culture) and how it unfolds, he just wasn’t in his domain. He didn’t care to go there and was all over the map musically speaking – evident during his twenty-five minute set.  Scratchie B is a juggling selector and proved this later on the same night at an event called ‘Pepperseed’ at On The Rox Nightclub. I was there, he played well, but, there was no in between – the music was strictly for the ladies and gangsters. Enjoy the Podcast!

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 11.22.13

This SSF show featured SUPA LOADED Sound with DJ Scottie…Big Up Scottie and his Supa Loaded Sound. Yeah,  the show got off to a bad start with the late arrival of this Sound (formerly Fully Loaded), but, by

the time all was said and done, they put on a great show just under 80 minutes versus the scheduled 3 hours. MC Scottie and his co-pilot Blaxz Dun Da Place (selector for Super Gold) tore it up! Scottie has a big booming voice and he used it to his advantage throughout their short set. Although they’re a 45 Sound, he warned me that his dubs weren’t quite up-to-date and that we could expect to hear some dubs from his Fully Loaded days. Scottie loves Sound clash and has always carried respect for the dub plate culture.

Personally, I liked the Supa Loaded vibe. Scottie’s MC skills were impressive and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to him. His vibe was reminiscent of the ‘early warm’ clash arenas from back in the day. The chat room however told a different story. No love for Supa Loaded on this night, accused of playing splice chunes and droppin’ a carbon copy of a Chronixx chune – woi!  Supa Loaded pushing their ‘super juggling’ concept presented a split mix of 45’s and dubs featuring artistes such as Chronixx, Sizzla, Lindo P., Serani, Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man, Chuck Fenda, Capleton, Bushman and many, many, more – this wasn’t enough to please the massive. They called ’em out on the point of their dubs being outdated – listen and judge for yourself. Enjoy the Podcast!

BLACK SCORPIO Sound, DOWNBEAT Sound 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 11.29.13

This SSF show featured DOWNBEAT Sound with MC Tony Screw aka Downbeat the Ruler + DJ Chris. Also on the show, BLACK SCORPIO with DJ Fadda Jack, and REBEL TONE SOUND with DJ Newby Blacka… This

show was most enjoyable! Sound System Fridays was blessed with two veteran foundation Sounds – Downbeat and Black Scorpio. Both Sounds were in town to take part in ‘Legends of Dancehall’ – a half dance/half award show that was happening at the JCA later on that night. Little did Downbeat and Black Scorpio know that they would be recognized and honoured for their contributions over the years with a Lifetime Achievement Award courtesy of King Turbo.

Black Scorpio and Downbeat’s stay was short, but, sweet. Both Sounds gave the massive a taste of some of their classic dubs from the past right up until the present whilst MC’ing. I was in total awe! I didn’t know just how deep their boxes ran, I just knew about their contributions to the industry – owning a Sound System and holding producer credits. I was looking forward to interviewing these legendary cats live and direct!

Unfortunately, both Sounds had to leave before midnight for their performance at the JCA. What a shame!  I was so looking forward to doing my usual interview, especially with these guys – legends! Big Up Newby who held it down until the end of the show! He picked up the vibes and took us to a higher level.

Big Up Jahmin of King Turbo for securing the Sounds and for bringing them down to the ReggaeMania studio! Big Up Klymaxx Sound as well as Eclipse Sound – they passed through, but, did not play. Fulljoy
