Top Canadian Clash Sounds of 2019

#3: MYSTIC – TOP CANADIAN CLASH SOUND 2019

Our pollsters awarded Mystic the #3 spot for 2019’s Top Canadian Clash Sound. This may seem like a surprise to some, since they are the current World Clash title holders, but World Clash was last held in 2018, the year they captured the championship. Since then it’s been a downward slide for Mystic. Nobody has clashed them since winning World Clash – this is unprecedented! Now, because so much time has gone by, the reasons why doesn’t seem to matter so much. Surely, nobody could’ve predicted this. By now Mystic should have toured the world, and clashed one or two big Sounds.

Ask Mystic, they will tell you “nobody” wants to pay them the clash price they believe they deserve for being World Clash champions. Ask the streets, and they tell you promoter Chin and Mystic don’t see eye-to-eye, and Chin, in his vengeance and partisan interest, has chosen to support and push second place runners up Dynamq Sound instead. Ironically, so far, despite being given a number of prime opportunities under Chin’s wings, Dynamq, has failed to find championship caliber, and did not ‘earn’ the right to rep their territory in the next 2020 World Clash.

I truly feel for Mystic, – yes, they won World Clash, a title which now seems a bit watered down, but they have seemingly not yet reaped any rewards from it. Mystic feels entitled to respect because of their World Clash title, a great Canadian achievement, but it seems they’re still fighting for it, or people are fighting them. Their lack of clash activity since winning the big title is a telling tale – something is wrong in the camp. Fortunately, with the postponement of World Clash to 2020, Mystic will still have a little bit of time left to take a clash, and not go down as the only World Clash champion not to engage in a single clash, after winning the title.

I’m hoping for Mystic’s sake, that they will seek management and re-brand themselves.  A big opportunity sits right around the corner, and if they can pull off a win and “put up”, then all their critics will have no choice but to ‘shut up’ and ‘sit the fuck down’! Big up Mystic, in-active for the 2019 year in sound clash, yet still a ‘bad’ sound, and even better, still going to World Clash to rep Canada later this year.

Congratulations to Mystic, voted #3 in our ReggaeMania.comTops’ Awards for ‘Top Canadian Clash Sound of 2019′.

Says Polly Famous (One-A-Day), in comparing Jimmy Spliff to Jakes; ‘There is no comparison, Jimmy is not in Jakes league. Big up Jimmy, he’s a bad MC, but his style is different than Jakes. Jakes has it naturally, he’s just bad overall. When you mention Jakes style, you have to put him in a league with Firelinks, Trooper, Matterhorn, Panther. When a man have it, dem have it, him ting superior. Him a di real authentic meaning of a selector, the man that’s ruling right now. I give him that – the number one MC currently’.

Clash fans should also know that Jakes, aside from being a great war MC, is also a great juggling selector. Although sometimes criticized for speeches and arguments that don’t quite make sense, there’s another reason why Jakes has bragging rights.

Says Skully (Mello Vibes Sound); ‘Jakes is the one who bus the ‘Old People Say’ Al Campbell song (Tune-in riddim). The tune has now become a ‘must play’ dub in the clash scene. Jakes made it go viral, everybody started playing it because of the way he introduced and premiered it at an Addies dance. I’m not saying he was the first to play it, or that he was the only one who had it, but his delivery made everybody go out and cut it. Now everybody plays that songStyle – Old people say – if you test Soul Supreme you might get gun down…’.

Jakes and his Soul Supreme Sound continue to be in high demand by promoters around the world, and they earn 3rd place in our ReggaeMania ‘Tops’ Award for ‘Best International Clash Sound of 2019′.

#2: KLYMAXX – TOP CANADIAN CLASH SOUND 2019

Despite only competing in one clash this year, Toronto’s Klymaxx Sound gets the runner-up position for ‘Top 2019 Canadian Clash Sound’. Klymaxx earns the number two spot chiefly because they were this year’s winners of Canada Rumble, giving them an automatic birth in the upcoming 2020 Irish & Chin World Clash. We credit Klymaxx for rising to the occasion and defeating five Sounds in one night, Super Fresh, Cumtraxx, Sniper, Majestic Vybz and King Aggression.

Klymaxx
has not earned this runner-up spot by fluke. They are some of the nicest and most genuine guys in the business, and because they are approachable and carry a good attitude, they are loved by and respected by their Canadian sound fraternity. Klymaxx can also brag for being one of a small selection of Toronto sounds who actually have a loyal fan base that follows them wherever and whenever they clash, a delight for clash promoters.

Make no mistake about it – Klymaxx is a  consistent and fearless clash sound with intellectual thinkers. They are the first to say ‘fuck the politics’, they just want to kill sound, especially when the price is right. I recently had a conversation with Trashy Pops of Turbulance Sound, and asked him why Klymaxx was his first choice for Canadian Clash Sound of 2019. Says Pops;

‘Squidly (MC) and Specialist (DJ) have the best chemistry I’ve ever seen as a selector and MC in the Toronto clash scene. I love that about them. I don’t see nobody else with that. Squidly knows how know how to control the crowd, and has a lot of stage presence. It’s not just cussing and cursing, he has a madness with the people.’

Big up Klymaxx for their 2nd place honours – and I’m sure I speak for the entire Canadian clash fraternity in wishing them good luck in next year’s World Clash, when they, alongside Mystic, will compete for Canada and try to bring the trophy back home for a fourth consecutive year!

Congratulations to Klymaxx, voted #2 in our ReggaeMania.comTops’ Awards for ‘Top Canadian Clash Sound 2019′.

#1: SOUL SURVIVAL – TOP CANADIAN CLASH SOUND 2019

Congratulations to Toronto’s Soul Survival, voted ‘Top Clash Sound of 2019‘ by our ReggaeMania.com Award pollsters. Soul Survival, technically, had an unbeaten record for 2019, having participated in two clashes and winning them both. To date, no other Canadian sound, perhaps with the exception of Montreal’s Little Thunder, can claim two victories for 2019 clashes, so credit goes to the Soul Survivalcrew.

The annual Sound Rage sound clash took place at 40 Hanlans on Saturday April 13th, 2019. Soul Survival, two-time Fully Loaded champions (2011-2012), emerged supreme against King Vower and 2017 Fully Loaded champions Laza Force. Soul Survival got a good fight that night from Vower, but Vower was eliminated after the 3rd round. It was smooth sailing after that for Survival, later eliminating Laza Forcein a 6-1 landslide tune-fi-tune showdown.

But that would only be ‘win number one’ for Pablo and his Soul Survival crew. They would return to bat and come out winners of the ‘Going To The Cemetery‘ sound clash, Soul Survival vs Delta Force (one-on-one) at Slam Grill (3685 Keele St., Toronto) on Saturday November 23rd. This clash ended in a 3-round “lock off” for Soul Survival. One of the biggest and most memorable forwards for the night that set the momentum for Survival and helped them win the 1st round, happened after Delta Force used their RoundheadShoe Boss’ dub to try and diss Pablo (Survival MC). The crowd lost it when Survival responded to the attack with a creative counter-action General B dub — ‘Bad Inna Dem New Pants and Shoes’, and the right speech to go with it.

Soul Survival has a bright future ahead, and just like Klymaxx, will say yes to any reasonable offer inviting them to clash, locally or internationally, because they are hungry and fearless. Look for them to be clashing next at ‘Apocalypse’, Saturday March 28th at Twilight Lounge, Soul Survival vs King Fargo vs Royalty.

Congratulations to Soul Survival, winners of our ReggaeMania.com ‘Tops’ Award for ‘Top Canadian Clash Sound of 2019′.
