The thought of making a record never struck me until there was a cause. The gangs were terrorizing Toronto’s hip-hop movement, and as the city’s leading rap concert promoter in 1988, my events were often targeted. I did what I could, hired great security, preached to the badman dem on the radio, but nothing seemed to work. This activity was jeopardizing not only my events, but the progress and advancement of Canada’s entire rap music scene.
Then one day, a dance that I played at but did not promote, had a nasty aftermath, and a young youth name Clinton Marshal was chased down and killed in Flemingdon Park (Toronto). I felt the pain and the hurt even more, and decided to put out this record, and dedicate it to him and Skot La Rock (Boogie Down Productions), who had also been recently murdered.
I went into Beat Factory Studios with engineer Maximum 60 and I liked the first beat he made and then added my samples and ideas then lyrics. I had no ambitions to be a rapper, just wanted to make a statement. :Besides, I was fascinated as to why, despite being surrounded by so many great new and uprising rappers and emcees, almost none of them had the confidence or plan to release actually make a record. This was a big mystery to me, I wasn’t the best rapper and nobody expected a radio broadcaster and promoter to actually put out a record.
