SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS

This was the beginning of a long journey, the first episode of a new every Friday night dancehall-reggae online radio show hosted by DJ Ron Nelson and featuring-showcasing live the best reggae-dancehall and sound clash sound systems in Canada and the world along with the live artists they chose to feature performing live. Picking up from where CKLN Friday Night Reggaemania left off, Sound System Fridays was broadcast live on U-Stream (video) while listenable on Reggaemania.com. There has never been a show to replicate the energy of Sound System Fridays since its inception in 2012. Unfortunately U-Stream was sold and we did not back up our videos but we do have the pics, original show reviews and complete audio archives for you to enjoy.

SEPTEMBER 2012

DJ Ron Nelson

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 09.07.12

This SSF first show featured DJ RON NELSON, DJ DELLY RANX, with special guests artists Terminal DG, and Lenn Hammond. I consider this a great start, the studio vibe was so nice and Delly Ranx surprised me with his

dee-jay set, and both Lenn Hammond and Terminal DG were naturals for me as I have spent lots of time with them in the past. I’m experimenting at the same time with video cameras and camera angles and mic quality and little distracting things, but overall it was a successful launching and the audio is here for you to enjoy.

Ron Nelson + Len Hammond
Gideon Sound

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 09.14.12

This SSF show featured DJ Culcha and his GIDEON SOUND with special guest artist Nkrumah performing live. This was the 2nd of RMR’s Sound System Fridays–where top DJ’s and Sound Systems now take the

spotlight for the 9pm – 12am shift with a guest artist also performing live on the show. Last week we had Delly Ranx, Terminal DG and Lenn Hammond in studio – this show featured Gideon Sound with DJ Culcha alongside sing-jay Nchromah.  Enjoy the broadcast (and apologies to DJ Culcha for a faulty Serato cable that caused a few technical glitches).

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 09.21.12

This SSF show featured REBEL TONE Sound with DJ Newby with special guest artists Terrikally Speaking and Neilhyz. Rebel Tone Sound tore it up for Sound System Fridays.  Newby: the ultimate showman!  He did

exactly what we expected him to do – put on a show.  Not only did he drop wicked dancehall chune after chune, he also put on a showcase featuring himself, Terrikally Speaking and Neilhyz – artistes from the Rebel Tone camp.  His energy is insane yet infectious. Rebel Tone a big talent – enjoy the vibes!

SSF Collage 2 Show 3

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 09.28.12

Toronto’s Frazah C-Lection Sound took over the controls this Friday night for Sound System Fridays alongside his partner in crime – Kafinal, who added some spice to the bubbling hot sounds.  This show had nuff vibes –

great music, interesting dialogue and a very entertaining performance from Kafinal himself.  I must admit, I had never seen him live before, so, i didn’t know what to expect.  I was pleasantly surprised!  Enjoy the podcast!

OCTOBER 2012

Steenie SSFridays 2012

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 10.05.12

This SSF show featured Toronto’s DJ FIRE KID STEENIE with Eyesus and Father Price performing live… Toronto’s Fire Kid Steenie graced the ReggaeManiaRadio studio this past Friday for: Friday Night

ReggaeMania – Sound System Fridays.  He was joined by special guests Eyesus and Father Price who complemented his style – go hard and that he did!  Steenie was thirty minutes into the show when I had to briefly remind him to slow down – he was soakin’ it like it was early in the mawnin’, at the peak of the dance.  Steenie smiled and kept rinsing dubs and chunes – he never ran out!  He dropped exclusive dubs from Mavado and I-Octane.  This show will excite and inspire DJs and music critics alike as Fire Kid Steenie is without a doubt, Canada’s Top Dancehall DJ. Yuuup!  People from the T-Dot already know this – we got our own ‘Tony Matterhorn’ right here.  Enjoy the podcast!

DJ Malcolm X

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 10.12.12

This SSF show featured Jamaica’s DJ MALCOLM X with the beautiful Tonya P. performing live…Jamaica’s Malcolm X passed through the ReggaeManiaRadio studio for Sound System Fridays.  He probably wishes he

could do it over again – his computer crashed minutes before the 9 PM show-start time, forcing him to use his second computer as backup which didn’t contain the same musical content that he had hoped to air.  I found his mixing choppy, even his cuts too.  I would say Malcolm X has some work to do when it comes to musical presentation, the music itself was sweet — not an issue.  Tonya P did not disappoint!  She worked the mic like a veteran and in my opinion, saved the show by bringing artical vibes to the ReggaeManiaRadio studio and the listeners and viewers at home.  Enjoy!  Big Up ICI Promo, Malcolm X and Tonya P!

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 10.19.12

This SSF show featured DJ BLAX DUN DA PLACE with live performing artists Fyahnese, Puppi Chapanore and iYawda… Toronto’s Blaxz Dun Da Place graced the ReggaeManiaRadio studio for Sound System Fridays. He

was joined by Puppi Chapanore, iYAWDA and Fyahnese (formerly Japanese) – who dropped by to pay tribute to his friend, the late Captain Barkey whom we lost during the week.  Overall, the night was highly entertaining – good music, great performances and controversial speak (whose name didn’t Blaxz call).  A special thanks to Blaxz who smashed the record formerly held by Rebel Tone and Fire Kid Steenie for most overall viewers during Sound System FridaysSteenie still holds the record for the steadiest viewership though.  Those that tuned in right at 9 PM right through until Midnight. Enjoy the vibes!

DJ Magnum Force - Hammer

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 10.26.12

This SSF show featured DJ Hammer and his MAGNUM FORCE Sound with live performing artists Younique and Jeffrey Judah… Tonight featured Magnum Force Sound with Selector Hammer at the controls (Dino, his

partner, was working another gig) and special guests Younique (formerly Singer Madoo) alongside Jeffrey Judah.  The night was filled with nuff vibes. Hammer admitted he’s not really into the “mixing thing” or the “computer thing”.  So far, on Sound System Fridays, he’s been the only DJ juggling CD’s instead of using a laptop with digital music software (I’ve got 1200’s here should any DJ want to use them.  Lol!).  He’s a party rocker and an experienced clash selector.  As time went on, he started to get into the vibe (he was pretty laid back at the beginning of the show as you’ll see) and when the show was over, he didn’t want to stop.  He had just warmed up.

Big Up the artists! – Jeffrey Judah brought real vibes with his DJ and performance skills – this combo. makes for a promising future.  Younique (formerly Singer Madoo) and I have a lot of history together – we go way back to the golden years of  Toronto’s Dancehall Scene (when shows were kept at the Concert Hall, Hungarian Hall, Party Centre and the like).  When I entered the scene after leaving Hip-hop, Madoo was already there and a star.  It was a pleasure to reunite with him.  I thanked Hammer for bringing Younique in as one of his special guests, I had lost track of this very talented artist who still resides here in the T-dot.  Enjoy the podcast!

NOVEMBER 2012

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 11.02.12

This SSF show featured MILITARY Sound with DJ Fatkat and very special guest Michie Mee performing live…Tonight’s show was entertaining from start to finish – starring DJ Fat Kat of Military Sound (Allan Ladd

couldn’t make it) and Canada’s own Michie Mee.  I liked how FatKat paced himself – upping the tempo, bit by bit, whilst delivering a good balance of dubs, new riddims and hit singles spiced right with jingles and sound effects.  He even took to the mic here and there!  FatKat’s experience showed – he ran the numbers (proven by the record amount of people tuned in since the start of Sound System Fridays).  Michie Mee deserves some of that credit too.  As soon as she arrived, the vibes tun up!  Once she got hold of the mic, it was over – she mashed it up!  Proving, yet again, why she’s Canada’s premiere female Hip-hop ‘n Reggae DJ. Enjoy the show!

Rootsman Sound

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 11.09.12

This SSF show featured ROOTSMAN Sound [MC Ranger + DJ Chucky Starr], with special guest artists, Stallion and Nkrumah performing liveRootsman Sound was the guest sound this week for Sound

System Fridays.  They were running late due to traffic problems so I played for the first fifty minutes until they arrived.  Rootsman is a big crew – they have eight soldiers in it.  Reppin’ tonight for Rootsman Sound – Ranger, Chuckie and Stallion alongside guest artiste, Nkrumah (who made his first appearance here 09.14.12 with DJ Culcha of Gideon Sound).  Chuckie brought real vibes to the studio and Ranger hosted as if he was warming up the crowd before a big clash.  They dropped dubs (no 45’s) – from their first chune, until their last.  I liked it!  The vibes were nice – nuff jokes too!  Rootsman played well and talked the talk.  They demonstrated that they have improved as a sound and matured as businessmen.  Big up Rootsman Sound and Nkrumah!  Enjoy the vibes!

Soul Survival

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 11.16.12

This SSF show featured SOUL SURVIVAL Sound with DJ PabloMC Bumpy Rage + Jr Selector, with special guest artists, Lindo P., Michael Buckley and I-Brilliance performing liveBig up Soul Survival Sound! – MC

Bumpy Rage and DJ Junior Selector delivered an intense delivery of dub plates, mixing and patter that gave anyone listening an exciting feeling of being inside of a sound clash!  After hearing a few minutes of this sound play, it was obvious that they had a plan – it was to be the first Sound on Sound System Fridays to play all dubs (no 45’s) – Rootsman was the first sound to drop all dubs, but, did so for only two hours and ten minutes.  This is very interesting because Sounds that pass through ReggaeManiaRadioSound System Fridays have no obligation to do so.  They have free reign when it comes to what they play, what they say and who they invite down.  So, the choice of playing all dubs comes down to a level of difficulty that each sound sets for themselves.

Soul Survival played all dubs and even the toughest critics had to admit afterwards that they did so rather flawlessly.  Sounds that are featured each and every Friday are also asked to invite an artist(s) to perform live with them – this is part of their agreement in securing a spot on ReggaeManiaRadio – Sound System Fridays.  I have to give Soul Survival props for thinking through their opportunity and delivering three very fine artists as guest performers – Lindo P., I Brilliance and a stunner, Jamaica’s Michael Buckley (I still don’t know how they found him!).  What an honour!

This night was hardcore to the max – ‘uncensored’ in its entirety!  I am still chuckling when I think back at Lindo P. tapping me on the shoulder – he said, “Wow!  Ron, we can curse – maddd!”.  At one point, I looked around and I swear, over a dozen men were in my studio!  Everybody was enjoying themselves and having fun. Nuff niceness!

I Brilliance sounded better than I’ve ever heard him.  I’m being totally honest when I say this, Lindo P. being next to him hyped him up.  Jamaica’s veteran artiste, Michael Buckley was calm, cool and collected when he performed and his voice…he has been blessed with a ‘golden’ voice – nothing more needs to be said. Big up Soul Survival and all of their performing artists – a bright future awaits you all!  Enjoy the show!

HEATWAVE Sound

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 11.23.12

This SSF show featured HEATWAVE Sound with DJ Spragga Roots…Heatwave originally started out as a Kingston, Jamaica sound in the early 1980s. Certain things happened along the way, and now Heatwave —

founded by the legendary Bobby Digital — resides here in Canada, with Spragga Roots at the controls (and sometimes Lindo P). If you love reggae classics from the ’80s and ’90s — Shabba, Ninja Man, Sanchez, and more — this is the sound where you might hear exclusive dubs from those legendary artists that you’ve never heard before.

Selector Spragga Roots did an excellent job delivering a three-hour mix that took listeners back in time — to an era when dancehall was fresh, new, exciting, and unpredictable. Lindo P was supposed to be the guest artist but couldn’t make it down, performing at two different places that night, I might add.

Now, Spragga isn’t what you’d call a ‘mixing DJ’, and in the past, I’ve criticized DJs for that. But on this night, because of the exclusivity of the music and Spragga’s intimate knowledge of every single dub he played, I let it slide. The vibes were right — it felt like being back in Jamaica, at a big dance where the sound was holding it down before the action started. Big up Spragga Roots for hosting Sound System Fridays! Enjoy the sweet, sweet sounds of yesteryear!

Guns' N Rozez

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 11.30.12

This SSF show featured GUNZ N’ ROZEZ Sound with beautiful DJ Tasha Rozez…Tasha Rozez represented Gunz’N’Rozez by playing hard. Not only is she the world’s number one female selector and clash champion,

she’s also Canada’s most traveled ‘soundman’ — and the first female to ever host Sound System Fridays. After a 10 PM start, Tasha unleashed a heavy set of exclusive dubs and specials, many of which we hadn’t heard from her in a long time. After all, it was Sound System Fridays — she could play and say whatever she pleased.

Tasha wasn’t in a talkative mood, so the ‘regular speech’ usually heard in the dancehalls was put aside. Her focus was clear: rinse Gunz’N’Rozez dubs for the fans. It took a little while for her to lock into a groove — her style felt a bit ‘all over the place’ at first — but once she got comfortable, Tasha delivered a tight set of dubs and 45s that made the audience feel like they were right in the prime of an electrifying reggae dance.

So, did Tasha have fun? The answer: Yes! She went a full 30 minutes past the show’s scheduled end time (midnight), despite needing to change outfits and drive immediately after to play at On The Roxx.

Big up Tasha Rozez for representing strong on ReggaeManiaRadio! To date, she’s tied the record (previously set by FatKat of Military) for the most people watching on Ustream simultaneously — and holding that number for the longest time!

DECEMBER 2012

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 12.14.12

This SSF show featured KING TURBO Sound with DJ Slingshot + MC King Sharpe with special guest Treason performing live…King Turbo is more than just a sound, they are an enterprise, an organization and most

importantly, a very tight knit family. I first want to big up Slingshot, Mr. King Turbo himself, the big boss, founder of the sound, the elder of the sound and the DJ that played the majority of the music this December 14th. What can I say…as expected, King Turbo “brought it” from start to finish presenting one of the better shows seen so far on Sound System Fridays.

The night, for King Turbo, wasn’t going to be just about playing music, King Turbo, veterans in the radio broadcasting business themselves wanted to engage in discussion about the dancehall scene in general and where their sound currently stands. I had no problems with this, although my rule usually is for a sound to play what they want and say what they want, it’s ‘their’ show from the time the first song begins.

Big Up King Turbo as well for having their complete crew represent inside our ReggaeManiaRadio studio, including Spex from G98.7 who showed up, hung out and hit the mic with Slingshot. Being present tonight endorsed the fact that Spex is still a part of the crew despite having success as a solo radio show host – “Spex Da Boss”.

Jahmin was in the house as well – now relieved of his MC duties for King Turbo, it was great to see him jus’ go with the flow now that the pressure was off. It turned him into a happier person (LOL). Big Up Cess (next to arrive after Slingshot), Suspense (promotional/bookings), Capleton (The Referee – marketing specialist) and Fatal (selector), who spun tunes in the overtime segment with King Turbo!

And of course, big ups to the newest member of King TurboKing Sharpe (formerly of Desert Storm). Too me, King Sharpe is the “black sheep” of the King Turbo family. Yes, he has been recruited to MC the sound, but, it’s just so clear that compared to all of the other members of King Turbo, King Sharpe has a whole different swagger and he’s on a different planet, perhaps Jupiter or Mars. LOL!

King Sharpe definitely balances out King Turbo, but, he’s still adjusting to fitting in with his new family. Sharpe is gonna bus’ if he doesn’t clash somebody soon. He’s so anxious, knowing King Turbo’s dub box is now one of the strongest in all of North America and guess who has complete control!

This show and King Turbo appearance has now set the new record for most viewers watching most consistently as well as the most people listening to RMR.FM during Sound System Fridays and for the fastest rising listenership from the show start time! It was exactly what I had expected from King Turbo. Enjoy the vibes!

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 12.21.12

This SSF show featured SUPER FRESH Sound with DJ Prophet, MC Milo, Double Six, D-Easy and Lindo P. performing live…Super Fresh Sound – Sound System Fridays…It’s impossible to talk about sound clash in

Toronto or Canada without mentioning Super Fresh Sound. This high-energy Canadian war sound was founded in 1991 by Double Six (Father Six) and DJ ShortMan (now residing in Jamaica), later joined by Prophet, Fire Kid Steenie (now solo), and Milo.

Many people know about my complicated history with Super Fresh. Put simply, if King Turbo (my favorite Canadian sound) was the “light,” Super Fresh was the “dark” — to me. No disrespect — that’s just the way it was. As an up-and-coming clash promoter and popular Friday night radio DJ, I was openly biased toward King Turbo, which only motivated Super Fresh to prove that no matter what I or King Turbo thought, they were the real clash kings — and they backed it up.

Unfortunately, that era of sound clash was also gun-infested. Despite an exciting and rich scene, gunplay was a regular occurrence inside clash zones, dancehall warehouses, basements, and nightclubs in the ’90s. It’s hard to believe now, but back then, if you attended a Wednesday reggae night at a club on Midland Avenue in Scarborough, you could expect “fireworks” — literal gunfire in the parking lot after every week.

It became so common that people eventually stopped running when they heard shots. Some would just stand there and wait for it to end, or casually exit without showing fear. Those were dark days, and sounds like Super Fresh, King Turbo, Black Reaction — and myself — all lived through it. Dancehall was our life; there was no avoiding it. Today, we are all grateful to have survived.

As for Super Fresh and me, nobody could have predicted we would one day unite like we did last Friday at Sound System Fridays. Aside from a bit too much gay-bashing during the show, Super Fresh, with some help from Lindo P., delivered an amazing night.

I enjoyed being in the “dark” (LOL), as the vibes were electric from start to finish. Super Fresh rolled deep with Fadda Six, Prophet, Milo, plus guests De Easy (Lexus Superior) and Lindo P. Despite the good convo, we kept the talking short — Super Fresh wanted to deliver tunes non-stop, and they did it with style. When De Easy and Milo arrived, the vibes turned up. And when Lindo P. walked in? It was over!

Super Fresh went into overtime, delivering five hours of solid dubs, tunes, and live performances that would impress even the harshest critics. Big up Super Fresh — it’s clear preparation paid off. Good luck on your next venture! Now, I’m looking forward to DJ Tyrone this Friday. Wonder what he’s gonna do? I know he’s gonna bring it!

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 12.28.12

This SSF show featured Toronto’s DJ TYRONE with special guest Olaf HD (Dun Dem Ent.) performing live…DJ Tyrone – Sound System Fridays…DJ Tyrone is one of Canada’s top reggae DJs, proven by his long reign as

resident DJ at legendary nightclubs like Club Paradise and Club Epiphany, as well as his time with Super Gold (USA), Soul To Soul (Canada), and Downbeat Sound. Tyrone proudly claims he was the first Canadian DJ to participate in a World Clash.

I invited Tyrone to host the final Sound System Fridays show of 2012. Although he arrived an hour late (due to last-minute preparations for his Girls Rush event), once he touched the studio, he did not disappoint.

This wasn’t about dubs for Tyrone — his clash days were behind him — but that didn’t mean he couldn’t bring the heat. He played hard tunes, juggled seamlessly, and showcased tight beat-mixing, all while carrying a lot of vocal attitude. Once he settled in, it felt like witnessing a DJ inside a packed party — Tyrone brought the club energy he’s famous for.

I’d say he’s been the best ‘mix’ DJ to pass through the studios so far. Big up DJ Tyrone — he made it look easy, and everyone in the studio had a blast! Shoutout to OLAF HD of Don Dem Ent., who performed live.

JANUARY 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 01.04.13

This SSF show featured Toronto’s KING JUDAH with MC Vybz, DJ Cornbread, T-Money, and Jeff…King Judah is a young sound from Scarborough who have already won a 45 clash (where dubs also had to be played) and

have achieved the respect from both friends and foes in Toronto’s vibrant Sound System fraternity.  To date, they are the youngest sound to make an appearance on ReggaeMania Radio – Sound System Fridays.  The night featured a presentation of dubs and 45’s, as this sound would not be drawn into the ‘all dubplate’ styled shows delivered by a few past sounds.  According to King Judah, they are a building sound and they felt no shame about playing 45’s in this stage of the sound, knowing that the art still required skills from both selector and mic man. So what you will hear both musically and in conversation, is the true King Judah, a mature new generation thinking sound still humble, but, ready to bus’ when the time is right. Big Up MC Vybz and Kornbread and their guest – T. Money for a nice live performance. Enjoy the vibes

Don Rankin Sound 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 01.11.13

This SSF show featured DON RANKIN Sound with Photo Rankin + DJ Curry. Thanks to the live artists who passed through – Trinity Chris, Lindo P and Michie Mee… Don Rankin brought it last Friday Night – arriving

early and bringing their own machine.  MC and Don Rankin President Fouti Rankin was first to select and play the sound, accompanied by his full-time selector Curry. The crew kept it easy, but, fast tempo for the first half-hour, after overcoming the turbulence, quickly steadied down to deliver one of the more entertaining shows seen on Sound System Fridays.

It wouldn’t come down to playing ‘all dubplates’ all night as some previous sounds had chosen to do.  Instead, Don Rankin mixed high quality dubs with high impact 45’s and entertaining live speech.  This was all topped up by great  live performances by none other than Michie ‘Bahd Gyal’ Mee (her third time here), Lindo P. (his fourth time here ) and Trinity Chris (his first time here) not to mention the on stage style of energy and antics from Don Rankin member – Problem Child.  He never stopped!

Congrats Don Rankin, you brought it to Sound System Fridays – your numbers were a testament to this (the overall viewers on Ustream eclipsed all previous record holders and you came close to tying King Turbo’s record for the highest steady viewership)!.  Good luck in “Real SteelDon Rankin!  By the way…this Friday January 18th, Sound System Fridays welcomes Silverhawk Sound (Richie Poo) and LP International (Killa D) – make it a date!

LP INTERNATIONAL SOUND and SILVERHAWK Sound 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 01.18.13

This SSF show featured America’s LP International with DJ Killa D and Jamaica’s Silverhawk Sound with selector Richie Poo.. It was a pleasure to have two quality sounds grace our ReggaeMania Radio studio

for Sound System Fridays on January 18th – inside was Jamaica’s legendary Richie Poo representing Silverhawk Sound, alongside Killa D reppin’ LP International Sound out of Flatbush, NY.  They were passing through as a prelude to the REAL STEEL event that was scheduled for Saturday night at Hickory House also featuring King Turbo (promoters of the event) and early warm-up by Don Rankin.

I was a little disappointed that the Sounds didn’t arrive to start playing at 9 PM, but, I sensed the promoters didn’t want to give away free ‘too much’ of what was to be expected the following night.  A little over 90 minutes of Silverhawk Sound and LP International would have to suffice.  I held it down with some creative juggling previous to these veteran sounds taking over the one’s and two’s.

It was time to ‘sound off’ – LP International touched down first, delivering some nice dubs and speech.  It was clear, when questioned, that Killa D (LP International) would be up for anything and everything the following night including any war that might start in-between the REAL STEEL sets.  Silverhawk took over and took us on a journey back in time with a selection of dubs designed to tease and please our listeners and viewers tuned into the broadcast.  Richie Poo (Silverhawk) also stated that he was ready to defend tings too.

DJ Ron Nelson

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 01.25.13

Golden Touch Sound gave me forty-five minutes notice that I would have to do the show without them due to the weather conditions.  When I got the call from Dwight, he explained to me, that as a working man, working

a traditional 9 – 5 job downtown, it took him two and a half hours to get home, so, making the journey from Mississauga to Scarborough was not something that he could pull off – timing wise.  I completely understood and told him to relax, stay home and we’ll reschedule him for a future date.

Having said that, I went to work with an attitude.  The sounds are the draw on Sound System Fridays, not me.  Now I was alone and had to play for three hours without much warning.  By the end of the show, I was satisfied with my performance, but, it wasn’t until I listened to the archive that I discovered how good a show this was.  Yeah, it was all about the 45’s for me – the mixing was good and the talking was kept to a minimum.

The only upsetting thing for me was the first ninety minutes of the show – it was totally distorted for the people tuning in on ReggaeMania.com, those listening on RMR.FM had no issues.  I corrected the problem and can assure fans it won’t happen again.  Next week, Lexus Superior out of Toronto and Washington, DC joins us for Sound System Fridays.  Enjoy the Podcast!

FEBRUARY 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 02.01.13

This SSF show featured LEXUS SUPERIOR Sound with DJ D’Eazy + Web + Melo, and special guests Guchi Automatic and Sherene Bromfield performing live… Lexus Superior brought it last night! A great show

with lots of solid dubs (no 45s!) and live performances. Big up to D’Eazy and WEB, selectors of Lexus Superior, as well as the artists who performed – Guchi Automatik, Melo, and Sherene “Weh Sweet” Bromfield (plus Super Fresh’s own, Prophet)!

Lexus Superior Sound, founded in 1998 out of Washington, D.C., is built for war. D’Eazy lives here now, but the sound still plays regularly in the D.C. area. In Toronto, Lexus Superior often plays alongside Super Fresh and has also participated in past clashes, some hosted by Ron Nelson Productions.

D’Eazy – still young and enthusiastic – showed great confidence during the show. His sound boasts a collection of dubs that are well-chosen and carefully crafted. For a sound that only started in ’98, their dub box is deeper than the average fifteen-year-old sound.

D’Eazy’s MC voice is commanding and fierce – very clear, and he’s entertaining as well. Listening to this sound, you get the feeling they’ll be around for a long time and ready to do serious damage in the future. Listen to the podcast – you’ll understand what I’m talking about!

Big up to all the artists who performed! The talented Guchi Automatik (still a bit shy) is full of lyrics and will grow stronger as his confidence builds. Once he starts looking into the camera and making eye contact with his audience, his stage presence will improve dramatically.

Melo’s experience was evident – he was lyrically on point all evening, never skipping a beat or a lyric. I’m not sure of his full background, but it’s clear he hails from the old school – reminiscent of the days when artists like Richie Lu and Kid Foreigna were throwing lyrics. I did criticize Melo for his excessive gunman lyrics, but he handled the feedback maturely. Before the end of the show, he dropped some more versatile content.

Sherene “Weh Sweet” Bromfield – what can I say? She’s young, beautiful, driven, a go-getter, hungry to make her mark in this industry. Her singing was alright. I’ve heard a lot of singers in my time, and I’ll go on record saying she still has some vocal work to do. She really needs to hone her skills – perhaps through vocal lessons or by finding a mentor to guide her. Once she does that, she’ll gain confidence and truly soar.

I admit, Sherene’s performance was too wild and, at times, very off-key. I’m not saying she sounded terrible – just that she didn’t live up to the hype of this show. That said, I’m sure in a year or two, she’ll be a force to be reckoned with!

Overall, a great show! Lots of people tuned in. Big up to everyone who participated in our live chat room – things got heated! That comes with the territory and sound clash mentality; some people are just plain miserable. So yeah, if you ever plan to listen to or watch Sound System Fridays on ReggaeMania.com, just check the chat room.

We also did our first-ever phone interview during Sound System Fridays with an artist from Jamaica. It was a little hard for him to hear D’Eazy clearly at the beginning, but we got it sorted out. Next week, we welcome Klymaxx Sound. Enjoy the podcast – the audio is a 4-hour and 15-minute experience!

This SSF show featured DJ Ron Nelson after a no-show by the scheduled sound.

Step-A-Choice Sound 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 02.15.13

This SSF show featured STEP-A-CHOICE Sound with MC Lumba G + DJ Itchy#1 + Kirk Ryan with special guest performing live; Ras Demo aka Demolition Man UK, JMAX, Fire Lion and Sadiki. Big Up Step-A-Choice

Sound – hot off the heels of their Sound Rage victory!  They defeated rival Sounds — Soul Survival, Lionheart and Ma Gash Intl. last Saturday night at Hickory House sweeping the ‘champion’ title yet again for the second year in a row.  For those of you asking…no, we did not book Step-A-Choice for Sound System Fridays after they won Sound Rage, we booked them weeks in advance, prior to their win.  Step-A-Choice was riding high and in a celebratory mood and that set the tone for the night.

Step-A-Choice came prepared – with a big crew (Itchy #1, Lumba G, Kirk, Ryan, Demolition Man and JMAX)…it was obvious once Itchy #1 (selector) arrived and Lumba G (MC) took the mic, that we were in for a treat on Sound System Fridays

This show featured some nice ‘radio friendly’ dubs, decent MC’ing and smooth mixing, not to mention great live performances from Demo (Demolition Man – UK), Fire Lion (Canada) and Sadiki (Jamaica/America – courtesy of Innocent of M1 Sound).  All three of these artists delivered entertaining performances that were flawless – nuff said!

The show was solid! Everybody had lots of fun and the crew responded to my questions and criticisms very professionally.  Once again, Big Up Step-A-Choice – a decent job from a young Sound with a bright future!  Enjoy this podcast, it speaks for itself!

Black Reaction Sound 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 02.22.13

This SSF show featured BLACK REACTION Sound with MC Blackz + DJ Super K and Eyesus performing live… Big Up Black Reaction who came in fully prepared and represented on Sound System Fridays!  Despite a late

start, Black Reaction did not disappoint – they delivered a solid show playing quality dubs.  Super K (selector) is one of the smoothest mixers in Toronto dancehall and MC Blackz, proved once again, why he is rated one of Canada’s Top 5 Mic Talkers.  Their effort was flawless – entertaining the listening audience with dubs that brought back ‘sweet’ memories of some of the best moments that we’ve seen in Toronto Sound clash. Black Reaction (originally built for war) have been through some serious clashes and can still brag and boast about it today – they stand as our Canadian World Clash Champions!

I asked Black Reaction a question I already knew the answer to – did they prepare for the show?  I asked that question because their delivery was so smooth – many people listening in might have thought that they had planned what they executed, this was not the case. Black Reaction has stepped out of the ‘clash’ arena in the last couple of years to focus on juggling.  They are aware of the disappointment from Toronto clash fans, but, stick with their philosophy – “sounds cannot live by clashing alone”.  I agree wholeheartedly!

Big Up Eyesus, a returning guest artiste to Sound System Fridays!  Sounds pick their own artists for the show and they don’t usually tell me in advance who they’re bringing in. Eyesus, as most people in Toronto should know, is one of our finest and his performances are always lyrically flawless. I can’t forget studying Eyesus…he was studying  Black Reaction and their performance carefully – watching, learning and appreciating the music and the vibes. I have to admit, I was too. There was just something different about this night – the vibes were ‘big people tings’, even though I’ve grown up with Reaction, this was an ‘evolved’ version of the Sound.

MARCH 2013

Klymaxx Sound 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 03.01.13

This SSF show featured KLYMAXX Sound with MC Squidley + DJ Specialis. Performing live; Lindo P., Father Digital, Reese Badda, Sirus and Junior Blinga… I must admit, I didn’t know much about Klymaxx Sound to

give them the proper respect that was due – that’s in the past now.  Klymaxx Sound, a Durham (Ajax) Sound, formed in 1992, delivered all the goods on Sound System Fridays last Friday night – by the time they had reached the halfway point of the show, they had already proved to the listening and viewing audience that they are one of Toronto’s finest Sounds when it comes to dubplates and good MC vibes.

Klymaxx is a progressive Sound – they proved that with proper preparation and excellent organizational skills, they could ‘flawlessly’ execute their show. At times, you felt the Sound clash vibe and at other times you didn’t – bottom line is, versatility is key. Great music that was played properly despite a few technical difficulties with Serato. One has to listen to the podcast to fully appreciate what I am saying. Big Ups to Specialist (DJ) and Squidly (MC) for doing an admirable job and for possessing a great attitude towards playing ‘sound’ in general!

The second half of the show was heavy-duty, so much so, that I told Klymaxx that this might end up overshadowing their DJ performance in the first half. They had a score of guest artistes that night – Father Digital (a.k.a. Fada Digi – in yellow), Sirus (Singjay), Reese Badda (hoodie & shades), Contracta and Lindo P.  Big Up Gary and Bugsy as well! The artist performances were off the hook – Lindo P. was in his element (as usual) and Fada Digi came off as one of the more polished artists that we’ve seen perform on Sound System Fridays.

Reese Badda was just as entertaining and showed, what I term as “styles of the future”. He’s a DJ with diverse lyrics and a style to call his own. People get ready, the wave is coming – these artistes represent the next generation of Reggae and Dancehall, ready and willing to take over! Sirus was interesting too, I just needed to see more of him – he was a little laid back when it came to his performance. Contracta didn’t intend to perform – he was “born” on this night with a name given to him by yours truly! LOL.

And Big Up Bugsy, the guy wearing the glasses that likes to hunch over when he DJ’s! This man has more talent than he possibly knows, but, his voice isn’t seasoned yet, he needs to work on his vocals in order to progress as a great live performer. Check out his lyrics though, they’re full of hooks and punchlines.

I’m impressed with Klymaxx Sound – this talented crew arrived without attitude and demonstrated that they could take advantage of an opportunity given – that’s what Sound System Fridays provides. Mark my words, we’ll see and hear more from this Sound in the future. They delivered all of the artists who performed – ’twas the icing on the cake.  Keep up the good work Klymaxx, you are the future!

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 03.08.13

This SSF show featured HEATWAVE Sound with DJ Spragga Roots + STEP-A-CHOICE Sound with DJ Itch#1Sound System Fridays delivered another tight show despite our previously scheduled Sound having to cancel.

We had to come up with a solid alternative, so I asked Spragga Roots (Heatwave) to return once again as host. He in turn invited Step-A-Choice Sound down to play alongside him.

Hmmm, two Sounds sharing the night…to my surprise, it worked!  Both Sounds had been previous hosts during Sound System Fridays so they knew what to expect. They complemented each other and did a great job holding it down for the night.

Heatwave played first and just as I thought, were an inspiration to Step-A-Choice (Kirk + DJ Itchy #1) Sound. It was good to see the them step it up ‘music’ wise to match the tone and vibe that Spragga had set. Step-A-Choice really does have some belly and they proved it with their effortless performance – no-holds-barred. At times, it appeared as if they were warming up for a ‘war’ inside a Sound clash.  Everyone in the studio was skanking and bopping their heads.

My question to myself…Did Step-A-Choice steal the show from Heatwave or did they sound as good as they did because they had ‘borrowed’ Heatwave’s Spragga Roots as their MC that night as their own MC had to work? Spragga has one of the more authoritative voices in the business still, bringing you back to the days of old with a golden voice with the likes of Stone Love and Captain Midnight. With Spragga as their MC, Step-A-Choice Sound, dare I say it, sounded more mature. Even Spragga himself was loving it, complimenting Step-A-Choice, “big sounds play big tunes” and “me see you a spend”.

Little did I know that Heatwave had an answer with his second set. It seemed the way Step-A-Choice played was now going to influence the way that Heatwave would play. Spragga came back with foundation tunes and as the dub stated, “Anything test Heatwave dead!”. Next up, five Shabba’s in a row and that was just the start. After a while, I was enjoying the fact that there would be no live artists to change up the vibe or steal the spotlight – I just wanted to hear these two Sounds play. Enjoy the podcast, the show speaks for itself!

MIGHTY CROWN 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 03.15.13

This SSF show featured Japan’s MIGHTY CROWN Sound with DJ Ninja Crown + MC Sami T… Mighty Crown was our ‘special guest’ Sound this night on Sound System Fridays.  Check out the archive as Sami T and Ninja

Crown made their first ‘official’ public appearance here in Toronto on their ‘Driving Force’ Tour.  The pass through on ReggaeMania was truly an honour and it marked the first night of three.  After Sound System Fridays, they were off to The Guvernment Nightclub for Reggae Café which was sold out!  Next up, WHEN DUBS DID NICE 2 on Saturday night at On The Rox and then a gig on Sunday night at Tryst Nightclub.

There’s not much to say about this broadcast.  Mighty Crown is a World Sound with nothing to prove. They played rather conservatively this night and just let the dubs speak – Sami and Ninja Crown  I guess they were tired since they had just arrived at Pearson in the afternoon and had lots of preperation to do for this tour.  I managed to get a short interview with them – this helped ease up the vibes in the studio. Big Up Mighty Crown for passing through Sound System Fridays!  Honestly, I expected a bit more in terms of tunes and speech. Playing on the Radio is more opportunistic than playing ‘early warm’ in a dance where people are just starting to arrive.

RUDEBOY SOUND 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 03.22.13

This SSF show featured RUDEBOY Sound with DJ Angela Montana, Shone, Tyronne, and special guest Lucci and Bigga Boss performing live… Big Up RUDE BOY SOUND and its selector – ANGELINA MONTANA! She

came to Sound System Fridays fully stocked and delivered a nice show full of big chunes, dubplates and live performances.

In the house was Bigga Boss (Sniper Sound), who was very entertaining once taking the mic late in the show. Performing live is second nature for Fatman aka Bigga Boss and even though he can be very raw and stink, I had figured that tonight he would tame his uncensored nature for his Sound System Fridays performance. He’s a musical terrorist, not just as an artist, but also as a producer and DJ/Selector, and he couldn’t be stopped! LOL. It was good to see him finally pass through. Loved what he said, “I didn’t steal your briefcase, Ron Nelson.” LOL! For those of you who don’t know, Fatman and I go way, way back – it’s all good.

Big Up Lucci – the live performer in the blue dress and the black leather jacket! She was very entertaining. Just like Bigga Boss, she did not hold back her uncensored nature and performed reality street lyrics that were funny, but at times, too honest. Lucci is a Deejay, Singer, and Rapper – the combination of all these talents makes for a well-rounded and packaged artist. There’s room for someone like her in this market, just you wait ‘n see.

Shoné was another artist who ANGELINA had invited down. I needed to turn up the mic during her interview so we could all hear her better, but overall, she’s not a bad sounding artist. She still has some work to do, as the threshold for a singer is twice as high as that for deejays and singjays. I sensed that Shoné is an artist who just needs a little more time to hone her skills – keep singing girl, the voice is there, you sound good, you just need to tweak it and a little more confidence wouldn’t hurt either. Big Up King Markus and Tyrone of Meccacity Soundz who held it down and played a nice set with a good selection of tunes while ANGELINA took a short break!

As for ANGELINA, wow! What can I say about her? She’s a little “off this planet” and I thought Tasha Rozez was different. ANGELINA is a rare commodity in Dancehall – being a female Sound clash selector/mic talker who takes what she does very seriously. She’s all about RUDE BOY SOUND and her personality fits like a glove with the craft of Sound clash. She is what I call ‘hyper social’ – she talks a lot and talks a mile a minute, but nothing’s lost on her, as she’ll have a response to anything and everything that you throw at her. She seems very guarded at times. I guess it’s just a protection thing – her ‘real’ self remains a little bit of a mystery to most of us.

ANGELINA MONTANA is a “Latin” woman – she says, “maybe that’s what throws me off.” Even after spending three hours with her, I still can’t claim to know who she really is. I’ve seen her in ‘war’ (Sound clash) where she has been the recipient of some serious verbal lashings from competing male selectors, but she always has a comeback with her lyrical prowess and the dubs to follow. Nobody can forget the time that ANGELINA participated in Fully Loaded – or was it Unfinished Business? – she literally bumped out two of her selectors who had not performed that well in earlier rounds and took over!

I’ll give ANGELINA an ‘A’ for effort, even though her execution could have been smoother. She had some good moments here and there, but the momentum was not maintained. The artist performances were interesting and the studio definitely had a RUDE BOY vibe. Big Up ANGELINA for holding it down and for putting it all together! I would’ve loved to hear more RUDE BOY dubs – their box is deeper than many think or know and their selection of tunes has been carefully crafted and selected. Mark my words, you’ll be hearing more of RUDE BOY SOUND in the future. Big Up Toronto, Canada for being the home to many top-notch female Dancehall selectors!

KING SHINE, STONELOVE, EXODUS NUCLEAR Sound

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 03.29.13

This SSF show featured EXODUS NUCLEAR with MC Kirk, DJ Vijay and Gadget. Also featuring Jamaica’s STONELOVE with selector G-Fuss, and America’s KING SHINE INT. Sound with DJ Jimmy ‘NatureBwoy’

Spliff…Our Good Friday Sound System Fridays show featured three sounds – Exodus Nuclear (JA, USA + CAN), who were booked for the show, Stone Love (JA) – passing through, and Kingshine International (USA) – passing through. I started the show off playing an ‘early warm’ set (first hour) as Exodus Nuclear was running late. Once they arrived, they still needed time to prepare. Eventually, they got their stuff together, set up, and played. Born forty years ago in Jamaica, this sound has expanded statewise and across the border too, while remaining true to its roots.

Tonight, Exodus Nuclear was represented by Kirk (MC) – the Canadian rep, and G-Fuss, as well as Gadget. Take a listen to the podcast; they had some interesting tunes. I want to thank them for coming down to the ReggaeManiaRadio studio to showcase their skills and sound. I wish them all the best in the future – there’s an opportunity out there; all they have to do is take it!

Next sound up… Stone Love Movements – Big Up G-Fuss! Stone Love Sound was in town for a gig at Surface Nightclub (The Government) Saturday night. I like talking to G-Fuss – he’s full of knowledge about the business and its history. I always give him credit for being one of the primary Stone Love selectors who waves the flag and carries the torch for Fada Pow when abroad. It was a real treat to have Stone Love pass through and play – it was fulljoyed by all! I asked for Stone Love anthems and I got ’em. Enjoy this part of the podcast – Stoooooone Loooooove – Ruff Ruff!

Last but not least, the final sound for the night was Kingshine International out of New Jersey – welcome Jimmy NatureBwoy Spliff! He was in town for a clash Saturday night and looked forward to coming down to Sound System Fridays to make a statement. Come showtime, Jimmy found himself enjoying the ReggaeManiaRadioSound System Fridays vibe and took off! There was no need to make a statement. He did what he does best – play – and he had fun doing it too. This kid is very sure of himself and, as a one-man killing machine, was not at a disadvantage at all (I think he liked it that way). Big Up NatureBwoy – he did his research and not only played well, but spoke well in his short interview with yours truly!

Big Up Exodus Nuclear, Stone Love (G-Fuss), Kingshine International (Jimmy NatureBwoy Spliff), and Problem Child (Don Rankin Sound) for the Kingshine International link! Enjoy the podcast!

APRIL 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 04.05.13

This Sound System Fridays show featured VIP Sound with MC Killa + DJ Spike + Father Kevin… I gotta admit, I didn’t know much about VIP Sound prior to their debut on Reggae Mania RadioSound System Fridays. I

remember, it was around 9:15 PM or so and I had my back turned to the door of the studio as I was playing the ‘early warm’ set. Suddenly, my instinct told me to turn around – once I did, I saw the whole VIP crew standing there (with MC Killa wearing a bandana over his face) – it was an impressive moment! After some introductions and handshakes, it was straight to Serato – LOL.

Big Up VIP Sound out of Malton – delivering one of the better Sound System Fridays shows that we’ve seen in some time! This Sound came fully prepared – attitude ‘n all (from the onset, they seemed to put themselves in ‘Sound clash’ mode). They played hi-impact clash chunes that allowed one to see and hear that the Sound had ‘belly’ and were ready to take on any comers inside the clash arena (they called out Outcast Sound). As their trophy states, ‘Kill R Be Killed’!

VIP is a young but humble Sound that was started in 1994 by Father Kevin (Owner), who has now stepped back to allow MC Killa and DJ Spike to be at the forefront and run the Sound. An excellent choice as these two perform and play in perfect synchronicity – a tight delivery that sees all big tunes introduced with precision timing and proper speech. That’s what I rate about a Sound, their ability to execute that well.

Big Up to the artistes who performed – Anthony YNot (Singer) and N’zye (Singjay)! N’zye, big up yuhself! You’re going to go far in this business! Anthony, what can I say, your performance speaks for itself! Big Up Mr. YNot, yuh dun dem with lyrics! Also, Big Ups to Starla (Manager) and Ryan Ismael (Photographer)!

VIP brought ‘real’ vibes in to the studio. They get a Big Up for being the first Sound to think about the marketing and promo aspect of their appearance on Sound System Fridays by bringing their own photographer with them to the show AND for being the first Sound to bring their ‘clash’ trophy to the broadcast – it helped solidify the ‘clash’ spirit in the air! It made for some classic and memorable moments. VIP Sound is a young Sound, yes, but they are confident and possess the right attitude to surge forward in this business – a force to be reckoned with! Enjoy the podcast! What a party!

DJ Ron Nelson

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 04.12.13

This SSF show featured DJ Ron Nelson after a no-show by the scheduled sound… Tonight, Sound System Fridays was suppose to feature guest Sound – Vertex, to no avail.  I received a call from Breadfruit at 6:30 PM

telling me that the Sound would not be playing tonight as someone spilled coffee on their laptop. Left without sufficient time to book another Sound, I had no choice but to play. I dropped ‘oldies’ for the majority of the show as a tribute to the many styles of tunes that are heard on Sound System Fridays by our guest Sounds every week in the ReggaeManiaRadio studio.  I had a good time flexing, but, I got lost in the art of  sampling, looping and remixing several tracks.  Listening back to the broadcast, it got a little too irritating at times – sorry!  Next week, Mystic Sound is at the controls.  Enjoy the podcast!

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 04.19.13

This SSF show featured LION HEART Sound with MC Alfire + DJ Hamma Bones. Special live performances by Gregory Culture, Mally Bless and Elijah… Big Up Lion Heart Sound for reppin’ on Sound System Fridays!  I had

seen them compete at GTA CUP CLASH April 15th so I knew what they were capable of. Once they arrived, Hamma (DJ) set up and went straight to work, or should I say play – LOL!  For the first forty-five minutes or so, Hamma went solo, dropping big chunes and dubs.  He really loves his music, it’s evident in his performance – he moves to his riddims, speaking of…he is one of the few DJs that remains loyal to the craft of DJing – he uses CD’s instead of Serato (world leading software for digital DJing).

As good as he was, I much preferred hearing Lion Heart Sound once Alfire (MC) joined the mix. He has an aggressive MC stylee, but, it’s controlled – if that makes any sense. He knows how to bring it and when.  Alfire knew he wasn’t in a Sound clash, but, at times he was not afraid to put out Sound clash vibes. He’s a versatile MC – ready for ‘clash’ vibes at any time, or comfortable jus’ juggling for the ladies.

Lion Heart Sound is a Champion Sound hailing from Scarborough, only ten years young, they’ve already made a dent in the Dancehall Scene. With them, ‘almost’ anything goes’ when it comes to dropping sweet Reggae music and crucial dubs. One thing I would advise Lion Heart Sound to do, is to invest in a Sound FX Sampler – it can go a long way when it comes to filling in the gaps and it’ll create total chaos inside the studio and out.

Big Ups also go out to Gregory Culture – one of the featured guest artistes (who is also a top promoter) of the night who showed us his skills on the mic – making all the ol’ skool MCs feel good about themselves!  He is ol’ skool, so, to some, his style may seem outdated, but, his delivery is bang on, his lyrical creativity is genius and his live performance was flawless, not to mention entertaining.

Big Up Mally Bless (dressed in blue with the shades on), he had lyrics galore and showed signs of becoming a great MC of the future!  Last but not least, Big Ups to Elijah and Bones who performed as well! All of these artistes left the listening and viewing audience wanting more.  Get your fix, download the podcast and/or view the show on Ustream.  Enjoy!  Next up on Sound System Fridays, Rosa and Rufus of Soul-2-Soul.

SOUL-2-SOUL 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 04.26.13

This SSF show featured Toronto’s SOUL-2-SOUL Sound with MC Rufus + DJ Grand Master RosaRosa’s been in the Sound system business for decades, yet he still stands strong in today’s Reggae and Dancehall

Scene. Soul 2 Soul is Canada’s longest running Reggae Sound system that is still very active and plays worldwide. I give this Sound respect as they are constantly rebranding themselves to stay relevant where as so many other Sound systems seem to fade away or are forced to retire.

Soul 2 Soul has many reasons to brag and boast, including being the sole Canadian agent/rep. for Jamaica’s Stone Love Sound and for having one of the best quality mobile professional audio/sound systems available for hire in North America, not to mention owning their own eatery – Turntable Restaurant & Lounge in Mississauga. Although they are not a ‘clash’ Sound, they have nuff dubs to make them relevant in a market suitable for the older more mature audiences, even though Soul 2 Soul will tell you they’re equipped to play anytime, anyplace and anywhere.

Soul 2 Soul is truly a versatile Sound and depending upon who’s at the controls (Rosa, Rufus or Ian The Mixmaster), people will be in for a real treat hearing a style that’s a little different from the rest. I can honestly say, Rosa has dubs that no other Sounds have (thanks to his connections), listen and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. This proves the point that dubs styled for juggling can be as entertaining as those crafted for war, people just need more opportunities to showcase their dubs to the massive other than just Sound clash.

Thanks to Soul 2 Soul (Grand Master Rosa & Rufus) for representing on Sound System Fridays! They wanted to stress the music so there wasn’t any non-stop mic talking that we’re usually accustomed to.  Personally though, I like the ‘MC’ vibes, I think it helps ‘define’ a Sound – without an MC, it can get pretty boring at times. Having said that, I wish Rufus took to the mic more, when he did, he really didn’t have that much to say (from a radio point of view) other than the same ol’ that you’d hear in an ‘early warm’ set at a local dance.

Aside from arriving late, the show went off without a hitch.  Some of the older heads in this business will enjoy and appreciate what they hear. Check out my interview with Rosa, you’ll really get to know history.  Big Up Spragga Roots for passin’ through!  Enjoy the Podcast!

MAY 2013

KING ATTARNEY

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 05.03.13

This SSF show featured Toronto’s KING ATTARNEY Sound with MC Garfield + DJ Gyco + Phantom. Live Performances by Def Shade, Major Current, Diesel High and ShinesKing Attarney Sound gets full props for

their show this past Friday on Sound System Fridays. Despite being an ‘overstocked’ Champion Sound, they are often forgotten about by Toronto promoters because they are a Hamilton Sound (out of sight, out of mind) and they don’t kiss ass, mine included lol. That aside, there is so much depth to the King Attarney box – Father Phantom (owner), as youthful and energetic as he could be, still aims high and remains positive when it comes to his Sound moving forward, garnering the respect that they deserve.

No disrespect to Attarney’s MC (Garfield) and DJ (Gyco), but, their dubs were ‘the star’ of the night – not only were they sweet, but, they spoke ‘louder’ than anyone else that night.  Big Up Garfield and Gyco jus’ the same – despite not being with the Sound since its inception (1982), both of these youths repped the King Attarney machine properly and brought a nice, consistent Dancehall vibe to the ReggaeManiaRadio studio with good speech and quality dub selections! Also, Big Up Turbo (Attarney Promotions) and Bocca who were in the house as well!

Attarney delivered on the ‘artiste’ front – Major Current, Def Shade, Diesel High and Shines. All of them performed well, but, my favourite was Def Shade.  The vibes were positive and everyone was having fun, which made for a great party! King Attarney decided to stay and play past midnight – it made up for their late arrival and late start. Yes, they were partying it up with the artistes, getting into ‘the vibe’ before they took center stage, but, we would’ve liked to have seen them play from 9 PM. I have always respected the King Attarney Sound – underestimated, but lethal! I think it’s just a matter of time before this Sound rises in ‘Sound clash’ popularity again, so, when the war starts…call King Attorney!

KAT ATTACK Sound 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 05.10.13

This SSF show featured Toronto’s KAT ATTACK Sound with DJ Fadda Kat + Traffic + Sensi + Gems + Tim + Garfield…I had previous conversations with Fadda Kat – MC and DJ for Hamilton’s Kat Attack Sound and was

well aware that I was dealing with a very confident and self-assured selector, despite having only heard this Sound once before.  Kat, with his short but sweet performance on Sound System Fridays left no doubts, his Sound is primed and ready to stand up to any Sound that thinks that they can come and test!

Once Kat took control of his music machine, things instantly peaked and the entertainment level remained consistent throughout the length of the broadcast. Kat knows his box well and is totally in sync with the chunes he selects, he does so with an impressive speed and does not sit on dubs.

The majority of the dubs played have been customized for Sound clash and despite having a ‘clash’ upcoming in mid June, this young Hamilton Sound didn’t hold back, thrilling the live chat room crowd with quality chunes and speech that they have come to expect. Thanks for the Blessed dubs! Blessed now resides in Hamilton. Kat Attack tun up!

Congratulations to Kat (a former King Attarney selector)! Big Up Traffik as well, a Hamilton artiste whose performance should let Toronto artists know that there are seasoned and ‘ready’ artists all over the place, so why be so Toronto centric?!  This guy had great lyrics and performed well, as he does for the majority of Dancehall/Reggae shows in the Hamilton area where, quite often, he is selected as an opening act. Big Up the other guests in the house, Garfield (King Attarney), Sensi, Gems and TimSo Kat, congrats again – your only failure was your late notice of your late arrival (you’ll make up for it when we discuss linking Sound System Fridays with the ‘other’ website further – *wink, wink).  Enjoy the Podcast!

TWIN STAR Sound

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 05.17.13

This SSF show featured Toronto’s TWIN STAR INTERNATIONAL Sound with DJ Junior D’Selector + Jr. Flex + Jermaine ‘Unruly Twin’. Live performances by DJ Chrome(NYC) and Wizzla(JA)… I’m surprised how many

people had never heard of Twin Star International (judging from our Chat room on ReggaeMania.com), but, after the show was done, it was clear that Twin Star International, though relatively unknown, must be ranked as one of Toronto’s Top 10 Sounds.

Friday’s show was madd from start to finish – nuff big chunes, wicked speech, braggin’, boasting, cussing and dissing!  The entire broadcast is a nice example of a hype selector delivering a solid radio show, where, just like in a Sound clash, killer dubs are in perfect harmony with speech that is extremely on point.

Junior D’Selecta – a one man machine who plays the sound and talk the mic at the same time, is no stranger to Sound clash, he started in the 90’s with Casino Sound before switching to Black Melody, but is best known for his days playing with Studio Mixx Sound, and will always be remembered for taking out and defeating Japan’s Mighty Crown and America’s mighty King Addies in a Tag Team Clash also featuring partner King Turbo a few years back, as well as a victory over Blackat witih selector Panther back in the Zone One days.

If you know Junior D personally however, you’ll find  him to be a very obsessed, confident and sometimes cocky MC/Selector  just waiting for his next opportunity to kill Sound – any Sound, no matter the territory or rank. Personally, I think he is one of the smartest selectors in the business, he attends every clash and studies clash DVDs and Cassettes going back to the foundation of Dancehall.

You’ll see from the broadcast that Twin Star International is not afraid to talk di talk and call ‘Sound-man name’, especially because they have the dubs to back it. The ReggaeMania chat room, normally full of critics and hecklers, seemed very tame on this night, as surprisingly, Twin Star International Sound were getting propa ratings by all for their enjoyable Sound System Fridays performance.

And people, check out what happens at 10:30 PM, when Twin Star plays a Twin Star ReggaeMania Dub!  Damn impressive, where did that love come from?!!  Twin Star – you are seasoned, ripe and ready to kill Sound, and I look forward to seeing you back on the Sound clash stage in the near future. I could go on and on about this Sound and the show they delivered, but, the broadcast speaks for itself (according to Twin Star, Jamaica’s Frankie Paul was scheduled as their special guest artiste, but his work permit was denied).

SNIPER Sound 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 05.24.13

This SSF show featured Toronto’s SNIPER Sound with DJ Necus + Big Roy + DJ Bigga BossSniper Sound gets a ‘thumbs up’ for their performance on Sound System Fridays this past Friday Night. I was pleased that

they “brought it” despite arriving late and failing to deliver an artiste to perform live. From the time they touched their Itch console (after 10 PM) ’til their end of show interview with myself (11:50 PM), they did so for about 110 minutes, not the 180 minutes that they would’ve played had they arrived and started on time (9:00 PM).

Back to the review…Sniper has a deep dub box and they proved it! Big Up Big Roy, owner of Sniper Sound and owner of the legendary ‘Sniper Dub Plate Studios’ – cutting dub plates for decades now for many of Canada’s and the World’s finest Sounds, whilst sharing intimate recording studio experiences with some of Reggae’s finest International artistes! This adds up to a deep Sniper dub plate collection.

This should explain why we got that quality of performance from Sniper – the dubs came hard, then even harder, then harder after that. After a few complaints (due to the late start), the ‘live’ chat room dynamics suddenly changed from pure heckling to pure niceness. It’s as if Sniper had all of their fans listening – the listeners and viewers kept bigging up Sniper’s performance – crazy! First, Twin Star International did it, now Sniper – buttering up the chat room diehards and getting nothing but love from haters!  What’s going on T.O.?  LOL.

I’m glad that Big Roy has found a team that seems like they’ll stick with the Sound for a while, I’ve seen a few Sniper selectors come and go over the years. I’m also surprised and happy that there’s such good chemistry between the Sniper DJ – Necus, and the MC, Bigga Boss aka Mr. Dockery aka Fatman, equally talented when it comes to juggling for the ladies or bullying over competing sounds in Sound clash competition. The two were in perfect sync for the majority of the night, delivering a solid performance with owner Big Roy overseeing the whole thing from his chair in the corner of the studio. At the end of the night, he was proud, as Sniper Sound exposed just as much as I think he wanted to be exposed, probably less than 10% of their musical arsenal. There’s a lot more left in that Sniper box that I’d still love to hear! Enjoy the Podcast!

Silver Bullet Sound 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 05.31.13

This SSF show featured Toronto’s SILVER BULLET Sound with DJ Snyper + Rally Benz. Live performances by Mally Bless, Cyberg, and Long Bless….I didn’t quite know what to expect from Silver Bullet Sound this past

Friday – I had mistakenly thought they were a young two year old Sound, but in fact, they’ve been around since the 90’s only parking for the last two years. Well, for those who missed this show, I’ll say Big Up Silver Bullet and the crew of artistes they brought to the studio to perform!  For a Sound I’ve never heard before, I will say, I was very impressed overall by this relatively unknown Sound who claims not to be from the East or the West (says owner Rally Benz), but from everywhere!  MC and Selector ‘Snyper’ (formerly of Military Sound) arrived on time and held it down as a one man machine from 9 PM ’til after Midnight, delivering a good variety of dubs.

It was interesting, people in the chat room wanted Snyper to take to the mic which he didn’t do much of in the show’s first hour, but once he did, he sounded good.  Snyper is a light skinned man who may look like a ‘white boy’, but is a more authentic sounding patois talker than DJ Whitebwoy himself (no disrespect to DJ Whitebwoy).

I gotta Big Up the live artistes who performed in the studio – Cyberg, Mally Bless and Longa Bless.  Big Up DJ Sheldon, DJ Connect, Lexx, Soljah, Crunch and DJ Mix Masta Vybz as well.  Cyberg, Mally Bless and Longa were tough on the mic and delivered one of the better artiste performances that we’ve seen all year.  I saw a lot of potential here and I especially liked the sound and style of Mally Bless – dunno why, but I felt his vibes that night – he was so totally on!  Listen and judge for yourself.

Silver Bullet, Big Up for a well executed show – overall, a solid performance!  I hope to see you in the clash arena one day.  For the record…there were a few skeptics from the chat room who swore that several of the ‘Luciano’ dubs played by Silver Bullet were “carbon chunes” – (tunes knowingly or unknowingly featuring fake artists trying to impersonate the real artists on dubplates).  Watch the show to see how Snyper responded to these accusations and well you’re at it, judge them yourself!  Enjoy the Podcast!

JUNE 2013

LP INTERNATIONAL 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 06.07.13

This SSF show featured America’s LP INTERNATIONAL Sound with DJ Polly Famous ‘The General’ + DJ Richie. Special live performances by Terminal DG and Jah Youth... It’s often said that Toronto, Canada is

home to many of the world’s finest dancehall clash Sounds. Now, as we approach the first half of the year, we can say with certainty, that, not only are we the ‘home’ to the best Sounds, but, we’re also home to the most lethal dancehall MC in the business – Polly Famous TheGeneral alongside his partner in crime – Richie, masters at the controls. They represent the Canadian body of LP International and have full authority to kill anything that stands in their way, literally!

Many of us here have watched Polly Famous grow and mature into his current role – a great mic talker/selector. He fought hard with King Klepto, a Sound he’d been with since 2002, but, musically speaking, the dubplate arsenal possessed by King Klepto was not of the same caliber as Polly and his MC skills. It might be fair to say…in retrospect, if winning clashes were based on MC skills alone, then Polly Famous The General would have a few more trophies sitting in the Klepto showcase.

So when rumours hit the streets that Polly Famous was getting offers from other Sounds Stateside, Canada was stumped, we had not seen anything like this before. King Sharp joining King Turbo doesn’t count. Part of the “Canadian” experience is having to witness foreigners coming here, stealing away ‘our’ best talent by recruiting and signing them. It’s been happening for years in Hip-hop and R&B and now, for the first time in the dancehall – a Canadian MC/DJ team has been recruited by a Sound that has stood firm since 1982 – LP International representing Canada, USA and Germany.

It was in April when Polly Famous got the call from Father Gary (owner) officially inviting Polly and Richie to be ‘official’ LP members. Father Gary had already checked Polly out at a small showcase dance back in February (NYC) where King Klepto lost to Camouflage. However, one should credit Noe Dawn, another member of LP as he was the real scout. He recognized Polly and Richie’s talent and their potential and brought up the idea to Father Gary about expanding the LP brand to rep Canada. Official LP International killers are…Puma – owner (Germany), Killer D (USA), Noe Dawn (USA), Junior Killer (USA), Ryan Shotta (USA), Chalice (USA), Polly Famous (Canada) and Richie (Canada).

The move to LP International from King Klepto is still something a lot of us here are having difficulty accepting. Just when people were starting to say that the ‘Sound clash’ business may be in danger of going extinct, we see sounds like LP International expanding, this shortly after America’s King Addies had signed to Irish and Chin management, hence becoming the next Sound to stand beside Japan’s Mighty Crown exclusively managed by Irish and Chin. Hmmm…I wonder who’s next?

Today, Polly and Richie are like two kids in a candy store – they are overwhelmed with joy as they play the LP dub box. After years of sound system frustration, they are now in a musical wonderland. It’s just a matter of time before the killing starts to become thrilling and for the Sounds abroad to start to fret!

Polly Famous and Richie are ready for war! Granted, there will be some adjustments for them both as they continue to study and learn the LP dub box on a daily basis. All this Sound needs is some experience – some wins, some losses. Let’s look at the Canadian branch of LP in a year’s time and see where things stand. Remember mi tell youPolly Famous (as an MC) is a game changer, just like Drake was to the Hip-hop scene. I think Polly Famous is that good and I predict the Sound clash scene will be altered because of what he will bring to the table within the next few years! He has an answer for everything and has a real understanding of the history and understands the business side of things too. Polly’s the best in game right now – he can play the machine, talk the mic, instill fear into an opponent one minute, then say something funny that makes an entire audience break out in laughter the next, he’s funnier than Panther (Black Kat).

Oh yeah, as for Sound System FridaysListen! and Watch! for yourselves. LP International didn’t miss a beat! It was a musical onslaught that spared nobody, including adversaries King Turbo (King Sharp and Spex), Super Fresh, Brutes Man, Twin Star, Tasha Rozez, Rebel Tone and many more. Musically speaking, Polly and Richie played it all leaving the critics speechless and the chat room members scrambling for cards to draw about LP’s performance.

Big Up Terminal DG and Jah Youth as well! Both were excellent in their performances and solid on the mic and at times even joined by Polly Famous himself – who knew? LOL! Also, Big Up Big G! – the first to arrive at the Reggae Mania Radio studio and Big Up the photographer who was in the house too! – sorry!, I forgot your name. Last but not least, Big Up the LP International fam for giving Polly and Richie an opportunity in a business where opportunities are few! If this was a test for your newly recruited selectors, they passed it with flying colours and are ready for world sound system domination. This show became the most viewed show since Sound System Fridays started. By 9:24 PM, the old record had been smashed and by Midnight, the old record had doubled for people listening simultaneously. That’s a good look for Canada and the USA. Nuff said people – Listen! Watch! and Download!Enjoy the Podcast!

Royalty Sound 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 06.14.13

This SSF show featured ROYALTY Sound with MC Thunder + DJ Rock StarRoyalty Sound is the youngest Sound to have graced the ReggaeManiaRadio studio since the inception of Sound System Fridays. This fairly

young two-man crew, made up of owner/MC Thunder (formerly of King Levi Sound) and DJ Rock Star, charged through the doors at a pretty good pace (musically speaking) just a few minutes after 9 PM. They were young, but eager, and judging from their dubs, appeared to have spent some serious money in their one-year existence.

Royalty went hard for two consecutive hours delivering Mavado, Sizzla, Luciano, Pinchers, Shabba, Cocoa Tea, Merciless, Bounty Killer and more. Everything seemed to be going well in the early stages of the show. MC Thunder spent a lot of his ‘mic’ time promoting Royalty’s willingness to ‘clash’ any sound, anytime, anyplace, anywhere – especially LP International (Big Up Polly, Richie and the rest of the crew!).

Clearly, we’re talking about two different LP ‘leagues’ here, but you couldn’t tell that to Royalty. Thunder and Rock Star really do believe that they have what it takes to stand up to the mighty LP in a clash despite being a year old. All night, they kept ‘dissing’ Polly Famous The General (formerly of King Klepto) for jumping from one sound to another and for not owning his own sound.

From the start, Royalty showed disrespect for Canada’s senior sounds by constantly referring to them as, yes, “dinosaur” sounds. It was an interesting strategy on their part, it was clear that they were looking for someone to ‘book’ them on their first ‘official’ clash – their hard work and dedication for the first two hours was almost like a ‘clash’ audition – warmongering ‘n all.

We should note that our ReggaeManiaRadio chat room listeners and viewers usually don’t mind if a sound brags and boasts or disses other sounds while showcasing on Sound System Fridays, it’s the sound clash way, but, they better have the chunes and speech to back it up. This is where Royalty ran into problems… At one point in the broadcast (10:08 PM), Royalty dropped “Odd Ras” (Nah Follow Nobody) – a Chronixx dub. Now, nuff sounds have dropped this during Sound System Fridays, but, let it play out, Royalty seemed to race through it like it was nothing. Our chat room ‘splice police’ (LOL) wouldn’t give it a pass, calling it a “splice” and “carbon” tune.

This accusation distracted MC Thunder (he was keeping abreast of the chat room throughout the night) – which threw him off his game. I found it to be funny, but, Thunder didn’t – he cussed the chat room community using words that I won’t repeat here. He was convinced that the aforementioned comments came from a bunch of badminded soundmen that just have no love for Royalty Sound. Then, Polly Famous called in, supporting the show, but asking me to personally educate Royalty about playing “splice” and “carbon” chunes.

We asked Royalty to drop the Chronixx dub again later on in the show – that didn’t stop the chat room comments from flooding in – people in the chat room were unforgiving and even more convinced, that the tune in question, was indeed a “splice” tune. Royalty’s feathers were ruffled – near the 11 o’clock mark, they made their situation worse by stating that they would “punish” the people in the chat room by strictly playing 45’s and if you (the listening and viewing audience) wanted to hear more of their dubs, you could ‘book’ them for a ‘clash’ where they would be ‘willing to deliver’. (Thunder later confided that the playing of the 45’s was all part of their plan – they knew that some promoters would be listening and they wanted to show them that they were capable of juggling.)

Royalty played a few more dubs before the end of the show, but, the chat room had dun called them out for “running out of tunes”. Big Up the people in the chat room still, but, sounds can play whatever they want, when they want on Sound System Fridays – you guys ‘n gyals are upping the ante, pressuring the sounds to play all dub plates. We’ll keep an eye on Royalty and see how they’re doing in a year from now. Next week, the ‘original’ Lexus Supreme hosts Sound System Fridays. Enjoy the Podcast!

LEXUS SUPREME 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 06.21.13

This SSF show featured LEXUS SUPREME with MC-DJ Dice Locke + MC-DJ Bling + MC-DJ Alex Frass + Shaka Lexus + Mucky B… In playoff games, they say that the team that makes the “best adjustments” wins.

Lexus Supreme has a history of transitioning through time – meaning they are constantly changing the framework of their sound in hopes of finding that perfect match. Today, as a new crop of young Sounds infiltrate the Toronto dancehall scene, Lexus Supreme (origin of birth – Jamaica, proudly reppin’ Canada since 2002) suddenly find themselves in the same league as Toronto’s veteran Sounds – how time flies, it seems like it was only yesterday that we saw Lexus making their mark in Toronto for some of the ‘earliest’ Ron Nelson Productions clashes.

The Sound System Fridays listeners and viewers were treated to a superior version of Lexus Supreme featuring MC/DJ Bling, MC/DJ Dyce Locke and MC/DJ Alex Frass – newest member (members Mark and Stubs were absent) – three different MC’s and DJ’s step-pin’ up to the plate – this was an interesting concept and a first on Sound System Fridays! I didn’t realize that Bling played the Sound (he looked totally comfortable) as well as managing it.

Dyce Locke was riveting – he doesn’t even have to try, he’s a natural! No shouting and screaming or having to put on a ‘mean’ face when chatting badness – making what’s ‘hard’ appear ‘easy’.  He is feisty, offensive and rude, yet, he’s entertaining. I noticed that he was having the most fun. Dyce was recruited from King Turbo a few years ago and is a great fit for Lexus Supreme and their solid dub arsenal.  It’s amazing how knowledgeable and comfortable he’s become with the Lexus Supreme movement and their dub box in the last two years.

There’s one more point to be made about Lexus Supreme. Big Up Bling for ‘setting up’ the house of Lexus Supreme with his latest venture – ‘power teams’, a move designed to make them ‘compete’ – a force to be reckoned with! There’s a lot of competition out there, let me explain…first, our own PollyFamous (formerly King Klepto) gets drafted by LP International (USA), then Toronto selector Frazah C-Lection officially joins Madd Squad (USA), Diamond, who plays with Stone Love (JA), lives in Toronto, Blaxz Dun Da Place is now playing for Super Gold Sound, Kirk (Riddla) plays with Exodus Nuclear outta Hamilton, King Sharpe (formerly Desert Storm) was drafted by King Turbo, DJ D’Eazy (Lexus Superior) has switched to Super Fresh and the list goes on.

Now, meet Alex Frass, formerly of Jamaica’s Swatch International, and the latest member of Lexus Supreme.  I’ve not heard Alex play Lexus before, but, it was a treat watching this man take control of his new Sound. Alex, just like Dyce Locke, is a natural on the mic and behind the controls. Adding him was a good look for LexusAlex definitely adds a spark to the Sound and has a great sense of humour. He’s smooth and very articulate when it comes to speeches and he possesses a ‘big’ Sound attitude. His vibe, to me added ‘outer-national’ to Lexus Supreme’s performance – you need to listen/watch for yourself.

Overall, Lexus Supreme played like a big Sound! The vibe was nice from the beginning ’til the end – it was like being in a dance nuff niceness! Big Up artistes Shaka Lexus and Mucky B!  Enjoy the Podcast! Next week’s guest Sound…Supa Bass!

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 06.28.13

This SSF show featured Supa Bass didn’t do too bad on Friday Night, but, it was clear from their performance that they could have done better.  Talk to Fadda Bass (the one and only MC and DJ for Supa Bass) and he’ll be

the first one to admit this.  Things didn’t kick off at 9 PM as scheduled as Supa Bass was running late and didn’t start playing until 10 PM.  Off to a rocky start, Fadda Bass – a former selector for USA’s Super Gold Sound rolled through a vast selection of dubs – decent chunes still, but, lacked in presentation (mixing and mic skills) for a smooth delivery. At times it seemed as though he lost his momentum as the show progressed.  He did leave the chat room populace wanting more – specific requests for ‘new’ riddims came in, but, he couldn’t deliver as he…

As a selector, Fadda Bass sounds nice – he has a rich voice and a potentially rude attitude!  He later admitted to me that when he plays alongside his DJ, he’s even ‘better’ at his craft, but viewers weren’t told about any other partner in Supa Bass. I still loved the way he sounded when he did talk the mic. I found myself running interference by encouraging Fadda Bass to talk more. At times, I knew the dubs weren’t working on their own, and perhaps because he, unlike most sounds playing on Sound System Fridays, did not arrive with a ‘bag a man’, just one solo artist who stayed in the background throughout the show until it was his time to shine. His name is Turmo Heights, and he would be the lone special artists that would perform on behalf of Supa Bass Sound.

I’d never seen Turmo Heights perform before, but, I was extremely impressed. I thought how cool it was that an artiste can just come in and save a middle of the road Sound System Fridays.  Maybe I’m giving this artiste too much ratings, but, I love to spot raw talent!  Turmo Heights was ON and his vibes were effortless as he rhymed in a style similar but not equal to Aidonia. He was refreshing!  A true original – natural and raw on the lyrical front, qualifying him to become a successful recording artist. I will go on record as saying…Turmo Heights will rise to become one of Toronto’s best new artistes! Enjoy the podcast!

JULY 2013

Black Magic Sound

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 07.05.13

This SSF show featured BLACK MAGIC with MC Cutthroat + DJ Wiggum’s… Big Up Black Magic Sound for their appearance on Sound System Fridays last Friday night. Originally out of Brooklyn, with a division in

Texas, Black Magic has expanded their outfit to include Canada in their quest for Sound System domination. Black Magic arrived late for some reason and started playing just before 10 PM. I keep having to explain to the Sounds that show up late that this is a three hour show and showing up late and playing two-thirds or less effects the stamina of the Sound as well as their difficulty.  Black Magic Sound went straight to work and dropped their first intro. The crew was MC Cutthroat alongside Streetz and DJ Wiggums of Canada’s Embassy Promo, absent was Father Derek (the owner) and other member Scarry.

Overall, Black Magic’s performance was decent. They had enough dubs to take them through the final two hours without any problems and presented a good variety of chunes proving that they were not to be underestimated despite being a relatively new Sound in T-dot. The combination of (MC) Cutthroat and (DJ) Wiggums worked well – they have good chemistry and the dubs were clean sounding and authentic.  I don’t really have any complaints and the people in the chat room were happy, but, if i had to come with some constructive criticism, it would be this Sound putting little to no emphasis on ‘new’ dubplate chunes.  It would’ve been nice and refreshing to hear some new chunes from some hot new artistes a la Chronixx.

One more thing…Black Magic Sound failed to deliver an artiste to perform live. Sounds who agree to do Sound System Fridays are obliged to provide an artiste(s) of their choice to perform live – this fosters innovation, creativity and talent within our Sound clash and Reggae and Dancehall fraternity and it also helps to promote them – get the word out. It’s great for International exposure too as ReggaeManiaRadioSoundSystemFridays reach is worldwide! Unfortunately, there was no artiste(s) live and direct in studio, but, we did receive a live call from Josey Wales and Yami Bolo advertising their upcoming Toronto gig on Saturday night at SVG Nightclub.

Overall, this edition of SSF was pretty good and Black Magic were true to their name – in the sense that they called out certain Sounds names, letting them know that Black Magic is ready, willing and able to clash and/or juggle anytime…Enjoy the Podcast!

FIRESQUAD, GHETTO STAR

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 07.12.13

This SSF show featured GHETTO STAR with DJ Triton + FIRESQUAD  DJ Mawga K… Born in the early 90’s, Ghetto Star is a Sound that represents ‘all’ of T-dot’s uptown areas according to MC/DJ (DeeJay) Troyton.

Missing tonight from ‘the crew’ would be Fadda Mugzie, Spankie, Damian Vibes and MC Crazy BigzGhetto Star would be represented by MC  DeeJay Troyton on this broadcast of Sound System Fridays. He arrived late and didn’t start playing until 10 PM, one hour later than the scheduled start time of 9 PM.

Ghetto Star fumbled their start. Their presentation of dubs was sporadic and it was only when DeeJay Troyton finally touched the mic (about forty-five minutes in) that vibes finally ‘tun up’, well, to a degree. That wasn’t their only issue, there was a problem with their dubs (for a string of about half an hour), many sounded flat and lacked bass – they appeared not to have been cut properly. The sizzling highs (hi-hats) were missing which prompted some listeners and viewers to take to the chat room to say that they thought that they were listening to a cassette, questioning the sound quality and asking us here at ReggaeManiaRadio to turn up our bass. Troyton would later confess to me (off mic) that some of their dubs were converted from old plates to digital and were not done professionally, hence, the flat sound. So why did he play these dubs I wonder?…

Aside from the aforementioned, their performance was ‘up and down’ – the mixing was inconsistent, sloppy and at times boring. There was a noticeable difference in Ghetto Star’s performance when Troyton worked the mic. He showed signs of being a very talented and entertaining MC. If he had worked the mic from the beginning of the show, the vibes would have been better as the MC ‘distraction’ would have provided a cover effect to help the Sound get through the quality of dubs issue that presented itself earlier. Troyton is symbolic of many of Toronto’s selectors – very talented and possesses potential.

Bless Up Ghetto Star for your performance on Sound System Fridays still, I’m sure next time around, you will take advantage of the opportunity that is given and do a show that surpasses your capabilities!  Perhaps you had an off-night. One thing to note…things would have gwaan better had they invited and brought an artiste(s) to perform (it takes pressure off of having to play dubs for three hours) and if their Selector Bigz had been there – he adds ‘fyah’ to the Sound. I’ve never known Ghetto Star as a one man crew, so for reasons some of us may not know, members failed to show and the Sound missed out on an hour to shine (says Troyton about his late arrival – “I’m a father…I had to take care of my kids, make sure they were in bed.”).

Big Up Mawga K of Firesquad Sound as well! This Montreal Sound did a short set after the Midnight hour, but mainly passed through to promote the annual Montreal International Reggae Festival that takes place in August. All in all, it was short, but sweet! Firesquad shot it down for twenty minutes playing quality Firesquad dub plates (immediately noticeable by the chat room folk who were quick to comment “the bass is back!”) followed by an interview. Firesquad’s set actually provided some relief on this Friday Night.

After the show ‘officially’ ended, I experimented with a new toy that I recently purchased allowing us to put callers live on-air. I spoke with artiste Terminal DG and a female named Keisha. Enjoy the Podcast! Next weeks Sound – Bassline!

BASSLINE Sound 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 07.19.13

This SSF show featured BASSLINE with MC Big Dawg + MC Luke. Live performances by Erupt, Sample King, Mally Bless, Elijah, Cyberg and Tonya P… Congratulations to Bassline Sound for delivering one of the most

action packed shows that we’ve seen on ReggaeMania.com since Sound System Fridays started! Big Up Big Dog (DJ) and (MC) Lukie! I’m not sure who should get the credit for putting this show together, but, along with Bassline, we have to big up their entourage of over twenty people – guests and friends along for the ride! With a house full of artistes, soundmen, friends and VIPs, this made for a gr-r-reat night!

The first thing I was impressed with was this Sound’s early arrival. They broke the developing ‘trend’ of Sounds arriving late for their show. There were no technical problems to speak of during this broadcast – this is where the ‘early’ arrival time comes into play. The earlier you arrive, the better. This extra time allows the Sound to get familiar with the lay of the land (studio), set up and to anticipate and solve any technical problems beforehand rather than being crippled by them during the live broadcast.

Previous to the show, I didn’t know much about Bassline Sound other than the fact that they had participated in a Sound clash. I admit I didn’t have too high of expectations for what was likely a young Sound trying to ‘prove’ their worth. I’ve got to give credit where credit is due – Bassline Sound took off running from the time they dropped their first dubplate until the last one played. Not only did they pace themselves well, they played professionally too!

Big Dog spent the first forty-five minutes getting comfortable with the sound before Lukie cut in taking control of the mic. Lukie’s confidence, combined with his deep voice and his laid back style made a perfect match for Big Dog’s dub selections. Bassline Sound was (as they described) a “bad” Sound! The spirit of Sound clash was definitely in the air.

Bassline may have made their entry into the Canadian market only four years ago, but, they have been cutting dubs for over twelve years now in anticipation of entering the Sound system/Sound clash market. Until that time came, someone had a business plan in mind…working in stealth mode, strategically planning, cutting and creating dubs – welcome Bassline. Big Up Lukie for having the hindsight, insight and foresight!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that this Sound is perfect or even on the same level as today-elite Sounds like Super Fresh, King Turbo or the Rootsman, I am merely stating that they have promise and I recognize talent when I see it. At times their musical presentation was a bit choppy, but, as time went by, it got smoother. Older Sounds will criticize the fact that their vintage dubs go ‘deeper’, but, a young Sound vs an old Sound is sometimes refreshing. Listen and judge for yourself! Big Up Bassline Sound for their effort still!

Bassline Sound also gets props for delivering a plethora of performing artistes, who, by the way, tore things up! First of all, Big Up to Mr. “Click Mi Finger” and “Roll With Me” – Jamaica’s own, Erup! An honour and a pleasure to have him grace the ReggaeManiaRadio studio. I loved how he vibed with everyone – this night, his celebrity status was a non-issue. He hasn’t lost his edge either, he still comes with the most creative Dancehall lyrics that I’ve heard in a long time.

Big Up Sample King, Elijah, Mally Bless (Sons of the Most High), Cyberg and Tanya P who performed, as well and to anyone else I might have forgotten! I must admit, it was nice having a beautiful songstress in the studio to balance up the ‘bag a man’ and DJs!

Big Up all the guest Sounds – Lionheart, Silver Bullet (Sniper), Roots Man (Gary) and Hollow Point Sound (Dino and Hype Rass)! Big Up promoters Rally Benz, Gary (Jamaican Boys) and Benjamin! Sound System Fridays – what a party! (no one warned me, LOL), vibes were nice and everyone that was drinking handled their alcohol – a big man ting! Listen and/or watch the show! – pay particular attention to the interview (near the end of the show), you’ll gain insight to Bassline’s philosophies and the people behind the Sound. Next week we welcome…Diplomat Sound!

LP INTERNATIONAL 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 07.26.13

This SSF show featured LP INTERNATIONAL with DJ Polly Famous ‘The General’ + Mega. Live performance by Puppi ChapanoreDiplomat was booked in advance and was suppose to be our guest Sound for Friday’s

broadcast of Sound System Fridays, but, with little notice, I received a call from DJ D.O.C. informing me that they would have to cancel due to a last minute booking (paid gig) at Luxy and that they would like to reschedule at a later date. He then told me that he had arranged for Super Fresh (Prophet + Milo) and LP International (Polly) to replace his Sound. Cool! The pressure was off and I was looking forward to the combination of these two Sounds playing together.

Super Fresh was a no-show (for reasons unexplained) and LP International’s Polly Famous was fine with that. When it comes to playing, Polly is like a kid in a candy store. By the end of the show, he had struck up a deal with Mega to do the ‘early warm’ for the Dub Fi DubYoung Hawk vs Soul Survival clash. Good for Polly who bragged and boasted about not repeating any material from his earlier appearance on Sound System Fridays (06.07.13) and stayed true to his word. His box runs deep!

Hearing LP’s dubs is always a treat! There’s not much I can say when it comes to reviewing this show.  Polly is a showman and is one of the best in the business. He just needs his dubs and a mic and he’s set to go – be prepared to either laugh or boil over, it all depends on Polly’s mood as he is playing. The cheering, jabbing and offending is all part and parcel of the Polly Famous experience.

And yes, Polly calls every Sounds name – whether good or bad, and no, no one is spared! He fearlessly and effortlessly challenges them to respond, even going as far as inviting them down to the ReggaeManiaRadio studio, if they dared, right then and there. It’s as almost as if he’s looking for instant action! Mostly throughout the show, Polly was preoccupied with promoting his own Sound clash – Call Di Undataker of which I will be hosting. For Polly, this clash has already started – he needn’t reserve one speech…LOL.

In the end maybe it was for the best that Super Fresh didn’t show up, this allowed Polly freedom to create and totally immerse himself in his craft, he even dropped a few lyrics here and there too – woi!!! There were a few guests in the studio, Big Up Michael ‘Stullarific’ Hazel and his friend – longtime fans and supporters of ReggaeMania and Sound System Fridays as well as Mega (Promoter) and the others! All in all, I couldn’t have asked for anything better. Enjoy the Podcast!

AUGUST 2013

KILLAMANJARO, LP INTERNATIONAL, CUMTRAXX Sound

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 08.16.13

This SSF show featured 3 Sounds: CUMTRAXX [MC Bones + DJ Dave + StullenBirdman], KILLAMANJARO Sound with Papa Jaro + MC Freddy Krueger + DJ Maphead. Polly Famous ‘The General’ reps LP

NTERNATIONAL…This was by far, one of my favourite Sound System Fridays shows!  It featured Cumtraxx Sound with special guests Killamanjaro and LP InternationalCumtraxx arrived late, but, got to work right away – tings heat up! This crew was hyped from the get go knowing that they would be playing alongside Jaro and LP. They set the tone for the night – pure clash vibes. Cumtraxx is a young Sound, but, don’t underestimate them. Even though they are still trying to find their place in the Sound clash fraternity, MC Bones and DJ Dave are ready, willing and able. Together, they compliment each other – this was evident throughout the night. They put on a solid show!

Big Up the whole Cumtraxx crew – Crazy Bones, Dave, Stullen and Birdman!  Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to interview Cumtraxx Sound this time around due to time constraints – both guest Sounds still had to play. The vibes between Cumtraxx and myself were a likkle awkward at the beginning. A year ago, I found myself in a Brampton barber shop debating the name of their Sound with them. Who in the Dancehall scene would name their Sound ‘Cumtraxx’?  I then learned that one of the owners last name is Cummings, hence, Cumtraxx – LOL!  Oh what a night…the studio and hallway were packed and the vibes were jus’ right. Cumtraxx wanted to stay and play longer, but, had to hightail it out of there as they had a paying gig.

Next up – Killamanjaro!  This Sound was repped by Papa Jaro (owner), Freddy Krueger and MapHead.  Once they touched the mic and CDJs, tings blast off! Not only did Jaro drop wicked dubs, they got into the clash spirit too and started to trash talk individual members of Super Fresh and LP International – their adversaries for Call Di Undataker Sound clash the following night. It was all in good fun. The vibes in the studio were at an all time high and Jaro showed no signs of slowing down – they had a whole heap o’ dubs.

Last but not least, LP InternationalPolly Famous at the controls with Puma (owner) in the wings observing. Once Polly started, pure joke ting run. I couldn’t help myself, I was laughing my head off and I noticed Papa Jaro from time to time was too. That was the most I had seen Papa Jaro smile. Good for Polly!

When all was said and done, the show was a great success! The chat room participants who usually criticize one thing or another had nothing to come with. There were no guest artistes present, but, it really didn’t matter as the night belonged to the Sound systems. Our listenership and viewership numbers spiked – go figure! This always seems to happen when Polly Famous is playing. Big Up Cumtraxx, Killamanjaro and LP International – May the best Sound win! Big Up all the guests that passed through too – Michael ‘Stullarific’ Hazel, Angelina Montana (Rudeboy Sound), Mark A (clash critic – NY, see interview), Yutan, Fire Briggs, Chris Dubbs, Uncle Ice, David and the very beautiful, Delicate Fiinechina!

Eclypse Sound, Mystic Sound

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 08.23.13

This SSF show featured three sounds; MYSTIC Sound with DJ Tyrone + DJ FabianECLIPSE Sound with DJ Mega, and SUPER FRESH Sound with DJ Prophet and Double Six… Our Sound System Fridays show was put

together at the last minute due to a cancellation. In the end, things worked out well. I would like to thank Mystic Sound, Super Fresh and Total Eclipse for coming through and for gracing our ReggaeMania Radio studio. All three Sounds had little prep time, but, managed to pull it off.

The night got off to a rocky start – tech wise. All of the laptops in the studio started to display problems.  Super Fresh were up first – their laptop refused to load up. They later left the studio without rebooting it.  Mystic’s computer did not read my Serato. I then hooked up their external drive to my Mac only to have it crash minutes later. It was time to start over, reboot…Things went smoothly from here on in. Mystic provided us with an entertaining thirty minute set – DJ Fabian at the controls and MC Tyrone showcasing his own stylee – swagga and comedy. A unique style, which, according to Tyrone, has been adapted by Polly Famous.

Super Fresh then did their interview. I invited them down to personally congratulate them on their performance at ‘Call Di Undataker’ – they won the first two rounds of a three round clash featuring the mighty Killamanjaro and LP International before popping down in the ‘chune fi chune’ round. Their performance was inspirational. Big Up Double Six and Prophet for passing through!

Next up, Total Eclipse featuring MC/DJ Mega. I hadn’t heard him play in years, he impressed me! Mega is a soft spoken individual, but, once he’s in front of CDJs and you hand him a mic, it’s over – he turns into a musical madman (with no disrespect!). Mega is a good story. After studying his craft and continuing to believe in himself, he has taken Total Eclipse Sound to a new level – from a basement Sound, to a Sound with a bright future. Enjoy the Podcast!

MADD SQUAD Sound 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 08.30.13

This SSF show featured MADD SQUAD Sound with DJ Frazah C-Lection, and Kafinal performing live… Madd Squad is an internationally renowned and ranked Dancehall Sound that is going through some changes as of

late. One of which includes the expansion of the Sound in Toronto with talented selector, Frazah C-Lection at the controls. On this night, Frazah proved that he can indeed hold his own, especially when it comes to new opportunities coming his way.  LP International just recruited Polly Famous from King Klepto, now, Frazah C-Lection was chosen to represent the Canadian chapter of Madd Squad Sound – a Jamaican-based Sound. Foreign Sounds are looking to dominate the market with newer talent – young selectors.

Madd Squad juggled 45’s for most of the show, entertaining listeners with music that they say, ‘had a right’ to play – everything they played on 45 was music that their production company produced. Madd Squad is primarily a ‘juggling’ Sound, despite selector Striker taking on a few clashes here and there.

Madd Squad put on a great show! I’m glad it wasn’t ‘all dubs all night’ – change is good! Frazah C-Lection is a quick talking and facety selector fun to watch. He wasn’t afraid to call out names and did just that – Polly Famous from LP International and Blacks from Black ReactionFrazah is young, cocky and fit, but, still has a little ways to go being the newest member of Madd Squad Sound.

Big Up Frazah C-Lection for hosting this show! Big Up Striker and Froggy too! This was Frazah’s second appearance hosting Sound System Fridays, but, his first as a member of Madd Squad Sound.  Be sure to catch the interview I did with him (near the end of the broadcast) as I asked him some challenging, yet provocative questions. Last but not least, Big Up Kafinal – this too was his second time performing on Sound System Fridays and he sounds better than ever (loved the Michael Jackson acapella)!  Enjoy the Podcast!

SEPTEMBER 2013

HEATWAVE, GIDEON, DYCE LOCKE Sound

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 09.06.13

This SSF show featured 6 Sounds; GIDEON Sound [DJ Culcha] and KLYMAXX Sound, HEAVYWEIGHT Sound, DJ CHRIS DUBBS, LEXUS SUPREME and DYCE LOCKE… Our one-year anniversary show was a blast despite

last minute bookings the day of! Yes, it’s been a whole year since Sound System Fridays was launched – what a year! A big ‘thanks’ goes out to all of the Sounds that represented – in order of appearance…Gideon Sound (DJ Culcha), Climax Sound (Gary, Specialis, Squidly and Fada Digital), Heavyweight Sound (Ringo and Ron-C), Chris Dubbs (Morning Ride), Lexus Supreme (Dyce Locke) and Heatwave (Spragga Roots) who showed up but didn’t play.

Gideon Sound started the show with some great new music – 45’s as well as dubs. When it comes to the International Dancehall Scene, DJ Culcha is always on the up and up and had plenty to chat bout. He not only played well, he informed us too! DJ Culcha appeared to be having lots of fun and even stuck around after his segment was done to network and socialize in the hallway. DJ Culcha is part of the Rebel Music radio show, heard live on ReggaeMania Radio and Regent Radio every Thursday from 7:30 – 10:00 PM.

Climax Sound was up next. This crew was riding high – not only were they invited to come down and play on ReggaeManiaRadio for our first anniversary, but, they had just found out that they were added to the Fully Loaded Metamorphosis Sound clash (Friday, December 6, 2013 @ On The Rox) roster as the fourteenth Sound! Climax Sound would also be clashing the following week at the Rising Stars Sound clash @ Hickory House, so, at the very least, this would be good practice for them. This opportunity allowed them to show ‘all’ that their dub box is indeed ‘deep’ and that they have speeches to spare despite the upcoming clash. Big Up Climax Sound, you never fail to represent!

Next in line, Heavyweight Sound. A Sound that was one of Scarborough’s biggest Sounds back in the day, they even gave King Turbo and Red Flame Sound a run for their money. Heavyweight Sound took us back to the glory days and dropped dubs from the 90s – it was a real pleasure to see them in action and to hear them too! Their set was steady. It’s almost as if they were playing it safe for their first appearance on ReggaeManiaRadio, which by the way, is okay if they were.

At the end of their performance, I heard Ron-C say “That was fun,” he had a smirk on his face – telling. We will be seeing more of Heavyweight Sound in the future, it’s just a matter of time. Having said that, I am pleased to announce the return of Heavyweight Sound – they are back and ready for hire! While juggling for now, they will continue to rebuild their box and re-enter the dubplate business to the point of satisfaction, then hopefully we’ll see them back in the Sound clash arena. Big Up Ron-C and Ringo! Welcome back Heavyweight!

Up next, Chris Dubbs. He represented with a nice set of music and played some pretty good dub plates too. I remember Chris Dubbs telling me after that people had no idea that he even had any dubs let alone being a serious collector of them. Little did they know, that Chris Dubbs, who appears to be harmless and humble, is actually a monster! Sorry to bus your ‘secret’ Chris Dubbs, but, you are no longer ‘moving in silence’ (LOL), everybody knows now that you are collecting dubs to ‘kill’ Sounds sooner or later! Big Up Chris Dubbs, I look forward to seeing you in Sound clash action!

Last but not least, Big Up Dyce Locke! He anchored the show with some artical Lexus Supreme dub plates backed by honest speeches. He targeted Sounds that just sit on their arsenal of dub plates and don’t clash with any consistency. Dyce Locke knows who he was referring to…it still seems like only a short time has passed since he was a member of the mighty King Turbo Sound. I’m sure there are some mixed feelings as he eventually left and joined Lexus Supreme.

I liked Dyce Locke’s attitude, he is young and rarin’ to go – ready to clash! Ironically, that night, he insisted that I add Lexus Supreme as the fifteenth Sound for Fully Loaded Metamorphosis. I told him to talk to Bling (owner) first as I was sure he would see things differently and would not allow Lexus Supreme to participate. No need to say in the end who was right – LOL. Big Up Dyce Locke same way! That’s what I’m talking about, real soundmen who are ready to clash at will because it’s in their blood! Big Up Fine China whose vibe and simple presence in the studio niced up the place! Big Up DJ Soul Sistah who also passed through for a visit too! I had fun and so did everyone else in the studio and hallway.

CUMTRAXX+EXCTACY+HALLO POINT Sounds

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 09.13.13

This SSF show featured 3 Sounds; EXCTACY Sound [DJ Fadda Morris] and HALLO POINT Sound [MC Hype Ras + DJ Dino + Gary, and CUMTRAXX Sound [MC BONES + DJ Dave + Tall Man]... I enjoyed this

Sound System Fridays show featuring special guests (in order of appearance) Extacy Sound (Fadda Morris), Hallow Point and Cumtraxx. All three Sounds will be partaking in the ‘Rising Stars’ Sound clash that happens at Hickory House Friday, September 20, 2013 with yours truly hosting and Extacy Sound doing the early juggling. This will be the first official clash that Hallow Point will be competing at and Cumtraxx is standing strong – ready to ‘roll’ over everyone and everything.

The night would prove to be interesting. Sounds who are going to ‘war’ don’t usually meet on common ground to exercise playing dubs before clashing it out. Make no mistake, Sound System Fridays is the night to introduce the listening and viewing massive to your Sound, to show ’em what you got – let them know which Sound have chunes! Sounds that were ‘tuned’ in got an early feel for what’s to come next Friday.

Big Up Extacy Sound, I’ve haven’t heard Fadda Morris play in years!  He had no problem holding tings down for his portion of the broadcast. Fadda Morris dropped some nice dubs and even called out a few Sound names. While playing admirably, Fadda Morris did not talk the mic and had no mic man present. His set was smoof – well programmed and presented. He gets a passing grade from me, but, in true Sound clash fashion, I rate the real thing – a Sound that combines the ‘best’ of in speech alongside ‘classic’ dubs. See you down the road Fadda Morris!

Big Up Dino, Hype Ras and GaryHallow Point Sound is new and this upcoming clash will mark their first foray in the clash arena. I was excited to see them perform and hear what they had to say and play (dub wise). I had seen Dino in clash action before and I remember being extremely impressed with what I saw – his performance. Playing alongside Cumtraxx one week before the big event was probably the best thing for Hallow Point.

Other than dropping a few good dubs, Hallow Point’s performance was substandard.  To begin with, there was no chemistry between MC Hype Ras and Dino – clearly, the two of them were in completely different worlds and on the MC’ing front, Hype Ras had nothing to say. I also saw no ‘killer’ instinct in them, unlike Cumtraxx, who had speeches galore and had no problem going after Hallow Point during their set. Later on in the show, I gave each Sound an additional six minutes to play and Hallow Point did nothing with that time.

To their defense, Hallow Point management was in the house and claimed that this was part of their game plan and that the massive would see their true ‘clash’ colours come clash time – ‘Rising Stars’ Sound clash – Friday, September 20, 2013 at Hickory House.

Last but not least, Cumtraxx.  I like this Sound, I’m just not fond of their name. This Sound has great chemistry and all of their members are ripe – each of them know their place and how to execute their roles within the Sound. Their confidence was oozing out all over the place all night long – they dropped loads of dubs and had heaps o’ speeches. It was clear to Cumtraxx Sound that the ‘clash’ had already started and that this opportunity was not to be wasted.

Nuff jokes – laughter ensued!  Cumtraxx were so excited, they just couldn’t hide it – they were ready to ‘kill’ anything and everything, including me – LOL! Giving them an additional six minutes to play before the end of the show was the icing on the cake – they brought it hard and thensome!  This was the closest thing to a real clash that we’ve seen on Sound System Fridays and despite it being a walkover, I enjoyed it!  The loud conversations emanating from the hallways outside of the studio were a testament to the fact that, come clash time, for better or worse, tonight’s antics would be remembered. Big Up Cumtraxx Sound for bringing the vibes! Enjoy the Podcast!

HALLO POINT Sound 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 09.27.13

This SSF show featured HOLLOW POINT Sound [MC Hype Ras + DJ Dino]. A Special live performant by Peter Rankin… Hallow Point Sound hosted Sound System Fridays this past Friday – fresh off their ‘Rising Stars

Sound clash win at Hickory HouseHallow Point believed deep down that they would take the trophy, boldly telling me so a week prior to the clash in a private conversation. Big Up the crew – Dino, Hype Ras and Gary!  They showed up on time, ready to play – reppin’ for the Hallow Point fam and did so for three hours plus.

It was an aight show for Hallow Point, who stated “nuttin’ nuh play yet” two hours into their three hour show. Dino was laid back, a little more confident now about using his highly criticized Itch laptop software to play Hallow Point’s music. I would like to provide a detailed analysis of this Sound’s musical presentation at Sound System Fridays, but, honestly, from where I stood, it didn’t seem to matter.

People at our ReggaeMania Radio studio were in a festive mood and were there for a celebration – this was Hallow Point’s victory party of sorts and the ‘bar’ it seemed, was fully stocked! Ironically, Hallow Point had been booked to play Sound System Fridays two weeks prior to their ‘Rising Stars’ clash win – win or lose, we were going to see them perform. Congratulations to Hallow Point Sound – this was their first clash ever and they pulled it off – victory! Nobody remembers who comes in 2nd Place.

Big Up the guests in the studio – Big Dawy from Bassline Sound, Maput and Danny (Management), Shefton, Hamma from Lion Heart Sound, Champu, Rondine, Horace, Gaza and one more person – Mr. Peter Rankin – the live artiste who’s performance was extraordinary! Watch the podcast and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. Peter Rankin is a veteran artiste who has been spending most of his time in Jamaica, people here forgot just how talented this artiste is, but, not anymore – peep the video!  Once again, Big Up Hallow Point Sound, their journey has just begun!

OCTOBER 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 10.04.13

This SSF show featured THUNDA HAWK Sound [MC Poison + MC Ice Ras + DJ Chronic M.D.]Thunderhawk Sound (reppin’ Lawrence Heights aka Jungle) hosted Sound System Fridays this week. I was introduced to

them by my boy, Plucky (aka J-Nyce) who’s been trying to get me to book them for Sound System Fridays for the last eighteen months or so. I never took him seriously because I didn’t think that he took the dubplate/Sound system business seriously – little did I know. I spoke to Plucky the day of the broadcast; he explained to me that he wouldn’t be making an appearance later on that night, but that his Sound would be there to represent. The only thing he didn’t tell me was that they would be arriving late – as in, over 90 minutes late! Even after they arrived (they didn’t have a ‘good’ excuse), it took them 15 minutes before they dropped their first chune.

Luckily for Thunderhawk, I wasn’t in a bad mood. Truth has it, most Sounds as of late show up late for their show – it has almost become ‘the norm’ even though this practice is unprofessional. I don’t quite know the reason behind it, but I can throw out some guesses – the Sound might be disorganized, they might lose track of the time, or they’re relying on others for transportation; and for some, it’s a tactic.

Some Sounds lack the insight of fearlessly playing for three straight hours as they don’t want people to know just how ‘deep’ their box is. I must admit, I had fun playing for the first hour – I ‘killed’ it musically! I was a little disappointed with the transition – I had to wait another 15 minutes for them to get ready, set, and play their first chune. I could have continued playing. It was time for Thunderhawk to shine!

I’ve got to give Thunderhawk some credit though: from the beginning of their show until the end, it was a smooth ride – musically speaking. Thunderhawk is composed of MC Poison (owner), MC Ice-Ras, DJ Chronic M.D., J-Nyce (Plucky), Greg Hawk, Mr. C., and Indian Stitch – the latter three were absent from the show. Chronic M.D. is a smooth mixer and his dub selections proved it – the night was well-paced and took on a mature tone. I had a good time listening! Whoever’s at the helm of Thunderhawk knows exactly what they’re doing – from their vision to dub cutting.

However, it’s one thing to impress me, but what about the ‘chat’ room critics? They weren’t having it! They too had been disappointed by Thunderhawk’s late arrival and were giving it to them throughout the show. Despite their well-cut dubs, they were guilty of dropping ‘early warm’ dubs during the peak hours of the show. The critics and Soundman alike were definitely not buying into their excuse – ‘holding back dubs for Fully Loaded.’ It was poor judgement on their part!

Thunderhawk expressed their fearlessness when it came to ‘speech,’ but only took it so far – they didn’t call out any Sounds’ names. Big Up Thunderhawk – a 20-year-old Sound that has been revamped after being parked for a while (the owner was playing for another Sound)! I hope they’ve got something in store for Fully Loaded; we’ll just have to wait and see. Big Up the artiste of the night – Kelard! This artiste is ripe and on point – he needs to hit the studio and record songs for radio airplay. Check him out, you’ll be impressed!

I asked Thunderhawk about their ‘clash’ victory record. They bragged and boasted about winning several clashes and that they had the trophies to prove it. I then asked them to recount a favourite memory from one of those clashes – nothing. The chat room got hot! According to the chat room participants, the clash they spoke of never happened; they were lying! That didn’t sit well with some of them who immediately took to Canadian Sound Clash Fraternity on Facebook to voice their opinion. I, of course, was unaware of this at the time, but can confirm the thread’s existence.

As for why a Sound would make a claim like that, it’s beyond me! I don’t even understand the calling of competing Sounds’ names – smh! Needless to say, it backfired on them – some of those ‘supposed’ competing Sounds were tuned in to Sound System Fridays. All I can say is, I wish them luck in cleaning up this mess! You can bet, come Fully Loaded, it’ll resurface and they’ll have to face it head-on! Enjoy the Podcast!

Metromedia, Renaissance

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 10.11.13

This SSF show featured 4 Sounds;  METROMEDIA Sound [Sky JuiceDJ Skully], RENAISSANCE [DJ Jazzy-T], STEP-A-CHOICE [DJ Itchy#1] and HEATWAVE [DJ Spragga Roots]…The SoundSystem Fridays line-up saw

legendary Sounds – Metromedia, Renaissance, Heatwave, and Step-A-Choice tearing it up inside the ReggaeMania studio. Earlier that day, I received word from the promoter that Bass Odyssey wasn’t able to make it to Canada due to circumstances beyond their control. So now, it was up to Metromedia and Renaissance to carry the show alongside Heatwave and sidekick Step-A-Choice Sound.

The anticipation of waiting to see and hear both Sounds made my heart beat faster. At 9:05 PM, I heard a knock on the door and saw Metromedia’s Sky Juice alongside Jazzy T from Renaissance with escort Shock Deeze of Lexus Supreme Music Group walking in. DJ Kenny would arrive on a late flight thus unfortunately missing the show. Delighted that they showed up on time, it was now Metromedia time!.

Oliver was not present, so all the selecting would be done by Skully. The bad news was that these iconic Sounds – Metromedia and Renaissance had to leave by 9:35 PM to get ready for their next gig (Love & Dancehall Reggae Giants at The Guvernment). So, while it was great having Metromedia in the studio, it really was a tease. Sky Juice, upon walking in, really loved the vibe – everyone in the studio was having fun except Jazzy T, who’s suffering from a migraine. He talked on the mic a bit, but didn’t spin any classic Renaissance dubs. This was okay with Sky Juice, who sat down and selected dubs that his younger counterparts would’ve played with a little chat going on.

What was interesting was that the viewers and listeners at home could not see or hear Sky Juice’s ad lib, which was comical! For almost every foundation dub that he selected, he would bother Jazzy T, asking him, “You know this one?” For the most part, Jazzy T ignored him and tried to nurse his migraine, but as Sky Juice continued on, it was clear that Metromedia was in ‘clash’ mode – warming up for their following night gig where they would meet Renaissance in war at World Clash R.E.S.E.T also featuring Fire Links, Soul Supreme, King Addies, Mighty Crown, and LP International. Good for Sky Juice, he should never be underestimated!

I didn’t get the chance to do an in-depth interview with Metromedia or Renaissance due to time constraints, too bad really as I was looking forward to it; both Sounds and I go way back. Big up to Lexus Supreme Music Group for delivering Metromedia and Renaissance to ReggaeMania studio – they went above and beyond and played a few more tunes once both Sounds left, then handed it over to Step-A-Choice who then handed it over to Heatwave. Both of these Sounds dub boxes run deep – classic dubs that are so heavy that they demand to be heard.

Most of Step-A-Choice’s set was without the MC, yet it sounded so good! Spragga brought the ‘dancehall’ vibes back – his bass voice anchoring the Heatwave dubs and specials made for a great end of the night. Unfortunately for Spragga, midnight came too soon. I had to end the show at a decent time as I was scheduled to fly out early Saturday morning to New York for World Clash R.E.S.E.T. No live artistes this time ’round, just iconic Sounds representing. Enjoy the Podcast!

Tempo Sound 2014

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 10.18.13

This SSF show featured TEMPO Sound with DJ Red Out + Jah Leon… Big Up Tempo Sound – hosts of Sound System Fridays last Friday night on ReggaeMania.com. The crew showed up on time (a first in a while) and

were ready to represent. In the house was Soujie (original owner of Tempo alongside Shabba Ranks), DJ Redout (MC/DJ), Ivan – (a visiting DJ/Promoter from the Slovakia Reggae Scene), special guest DJ passing through – Bigga Boss (Sniper Sound) and artiste – Jah Leon. This crew was excited! They were well prepared and presented an interesting journey back in time – they dropped dubs that hadn’t been touched in a long time, not to mention, a custom ‘Ron Nelson’ dub – Big Up Tempo!

Tempo Sound goes back to the late 70s, the King Tubby/Ska days when Sounds owned their own audio systems. Back in the day, Sounds that played out had to rent trucks, hire staff and set up their gear before even thinking about dropping their first chune on the turntables. Before Tempo set up shop in Canada, according to Soujie, only a small handful of Sound systems existed in Canada – Kenyata, Black Zodiac, Upsetta and Stereograph to name a few.

Some of you may or may not be satisfied with their choice of chunes, but, this is a non-issue this night. Tempo avoided playing 45s and cruised through their set without breaking a sweat playing exclusive dubs and specials (Michael Prophet, Colonel Campbell, Big Youth, Dirtsman, Delroy Wilson, Nico Demus, Hammermouth, etc.) backed by ‘short but sweet’ speeches and topped off with a solid live artiste performance anchored by a great interview.

Tempo revisited the late 80s and early 90s of Dancehall – although plagued with violence, it was musically more ripe for the picking. Few would argue that some of the best music ever put out was released during this era. It was also during this era that Toronto was put on the map – some of our best selectors today, including Fire Kid Steenie (who still reigns strong to this day) come out of that time period. People in the Dancehall Scene don’t know this, but, Steenie’s ‘initiation’ into the business was through Tempo Sound, not Super Fresh. Tempo Sound was the first to bus’ ‘im!

Soujie is an interesting cat – very skilled when it comes to discovering talent and being a mentor. Although Soujie is older now, he is young at heart and his spirit is free. Now that he has relaunched Tempo, he wants people to recognize them as a “war” Sound. Says Soujie, “Original, a deh so we come from, we a bring back di bad boy Sound. Mi guh a nuff dance and people a play di same ting everyday…but, we nah guh inna di play play ting – di joke ting”.

Tempo still has some work to do before they rise again. One thing I’ll comment on is the quality of their dubs – the audio quality is poor. This is most likely caused from transferring old scratchy dub plates to MP3s and not accounting for additional adjustment. Nowadays, a Sound must keep up-to-date dubs in their box in order to be relevant in the dancehall – in fact, a combination of old and new chunes is where it’s at – this, combined with skill, execution and speech is how you win in the ‘clash’ arena.

Tempo did score on the artiste front – a talented youth from Scarborough that goes by the name Jah Leon. I have no doubts, I think you’ll enjoy this artiste. Again, it just reinforces the fact that Toronto and surrounding areas are churning out some very talented Reggae artistes. Big Up yourself Jah Leon – you’ve got what it takes to make it!

On a final note, I would like to apologize to Tempo and to our loyal Sound System Fridays supporters for our site going down shortly after the start of this show. This was an unexpected surprise. Our hosting company shut us down (without notice), claiming that the traffic on our site had ‘spiked’ causing some interference with their ‘other’ clients sites. This was news to us, we hadn’t done anything different before, during or after this show. Fortunately, many of our viewers knew how to find us on Ustream and TuneIn. To ensure this doesn’t happen again, ReggaeMania.com will be moving to a dedicated server. Enjoy the Podcast – it’s slightly distorted at times – if you’re looking for better quality audio, check the Ustream link!

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 10.25.13

This SSF show featured SNIPER Sound with DJ Bigga BossSniper Sound represented on Sound System Fridays last Friday night with DJ Bigga Boss at the helm. The remaining members of the crew were off

promoting their “Fine Juggling” event for the following weekend. Bigga Boss AKA Fatman arrived an hour late, but, played for two hours straight. I liked the vibes he sent out. This Sound got beat up ‘musically’ in their last two clashes, Bigga Boss said, “no more”!  Perhaps that was the inspiration behind his playing that night – he dropped some amazing dubs, not to mention, his execution was flawless. With just Bigga Boss and myself in the ReggaeMania studio, it seemed a little strange – I missed the fanfare and guest artistes. Not much else to review here, download and enjoy the sounds of Sniper!

NOVEMBER 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 11.01.13

This SSF show featured NOBLE WORKS Sound with DJ Doug Skillmore + Otis Gayle. Also on the show, XIXGON INTERNATIONAL with MC David and DJ Shai. Jesse Royal performs live… The downtown Reggae

vibe was brought uptown last Friday night for Sound System Fridays. Host Sounds – Noble Works and Xixgon International featured live performances by veteran Foundation artiste, Otis Gayle and one of Dancehall’s most cultured – rising artiste, Jesse Royal.

Things got underway just after 9 PM with Noble Works at the controls.  As a stranger to the downtown Reggae Scene, I had never heard of Noble Works previous to Deejay Shai’s (Xixgon International) request. Noble Works, to their credit, play out four nights a week where they showcase their talent and versatility by juggling various genre’s of music – Reggae, Hip-hop, R&B and Dance.

Noble Works held it down for their entire set, playing exclusively dubs and came close again when they returned to close the show after Xixgon’s prearranged early departure (Deejay Shai had Jesse Royal in town to promote IREMEMBER featuring Luciano alongside Royal).  Big Up Doug Skillmore and partner, Ian! These two put on a great show and were solid from start to finish – they dropped Foundation dubs and even surprised us with a special Foundation guest artiste – Otis Gayle of Byron Lee And The Dragonaires and Studio One fame. Not to mention, they saluted Canada by playing many Canadian artistes such as Blessed, Lindo P, Tonya P (who provided a custom Ron Nelson/Sound System Fridays dub), Gappy Ranks, Masicka, Randy Valentine, Million Styles (Sweden), Jahdaa Blakk, Mr. Williams (U.K.) and more.  I truly enjoyed Noble Works vibes, not bad for a two-year-old Sound!

Big Up Xixgon International for passing through! A talented and tight Sound that came out of Trinidad and Tobago that now reps worldwide. They came in and picked up where Noble Works left off. With MC David and DJ (Deejay) Shai at the controls, anything can happen. I noticed that Shai is not a very emotional person when it comes to the chunes that he plays – no smiling, no grooving, nuttin’! – I  guess he wants to focus on his craft and not get distracted. That didn’t stop him from layin’ down big, big dubs by big, big artistes – always a treat! Their set was flawless and it flowed – watch the show and see for yourself!  Once again, Big Up Xixgon International David, Shai, Yves, Crash, Casey and Andrew – Thanks for passing through, representing and for taking things to the next level!

Last but not least, Big Up to Jesse Royal! This was my first time meeting him and I was impressed with his words of wisdom – his levelheadedness. Mark my words, Jesse Royal will bus’, it’s only a matter of time. He is a great example of what the international Reggae scene needs right now – a fresh take on life and living from a creative and talented individual who is wise beyond his years.  We’ve seen a sample of what’s to come from this promising Cultural artiste – keep your eyes peeled and your ears pricked!  What a great show!  Enjoy the Podcast!

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 11.15.13

This SSF show featured EXTACY Sound with DJ Fadda Morris + Rankin Joe. Also on the show, DJ Scratchy B. repping his CASH MONEY Sound… This show was noice! – Fadda Morris played a selection of dubs and

singles that silenced the chat room massive. On this night, it wasn’t about the talking of the mic for Extacy Sound, it was about the music. I’m excited to hear what they’ll have in store in the future! Extacy Sound has the ability and potential to take it to the top – to become a Champion Sound, they just have to build their box. In the end, Fadda Morris gets a passing grade for his appearance on Sound System Fridays – a good start for Extacy Sound.

I also give Extacy credit for delivering on the live artiste front. It’s something we ask of every Sound who performs on Sound System Fridays. It was an honour to be up close and personal with veteran Foundation artiste Ranking Joe who was in town to voice dubs! This man has so much history and getting a performance out of him was nothing short of magical, not to mention, historic. Extacy proved that they have serious links inna dis ya Dancehall business!

I also want to Big Up DJ Scratchie B of Cash Money Sound who passed through courtesy of ScottySupa Loaded! Overall, he played alright considering he came directly to the ReggaeMania studio from Pearson International. I don’t think he knew much about Sound System Fridays – what the show stands for (dub plate and Sound clash culture) and how it unfolds, he just wasn’t in his domain. He didn’t care to go there and was all over the map musically speaking – evident during his twenty-five minute set.  Scratchie B is a juggling selector and proved this later on the same night at an event called ‘Pepperseed’ at On The Rox Nightclub. I was there, he played well, but, there was no in between – the music was strictly for the ladies and gangsters. Enjoy the Podcast!

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 11.22.13

This SSF show featured SUPA LOADED Sound with DJ Scottie…Big Up Scottie and his Supa Loaded Sound. Yeah,  the show got off to a bad start with the late arrival of this Sound (formerly Fully Loaded), but, by

the time all was said and done, they put on a great show just under 80 minutes versus the scheduled 3 hours. MC Scottie and his co-pilot Blaxz Dun Da Place (selector for Super Gold) tore it up! Scottie has a big booming voice and he used it to his advantage throughout their short set. Although they’re a 45 Sound, he warned me that his dubs weren’t quite up-to-date and that we could expect to hear some dubs from his Fully Loaded days. Scottie loves Sound clash and has always carried respect for the dub plate culture.

Personally, I liked the Supa Loaded vibe. Scottie’s MC skills were impressive and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to him. His vibe was reminiscent of the ‘early warm’ clash arenas from back in the day. The chat room however told a different story. No love for Supa Loaded on this night, accused of playing splice chunes and droppin’ a carbon copy of a Chronixx chune – woi!  Supa Loaded pushing their ‘super juggling’ concept presented a split mix of 45’s and dubs featuring artistes such as Chronixx, Sizzla, Lindo P., Serani, Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man, Chuck Fenda, Capleton, Bushman and many, many, more – this wasn’t enough to please the massive. They called ’em out on the point of their dubs being outdated – listen and judge for yourself. Enjoy the Podcast!

BLACK SCORPIO Sound, DOWNBEAT Sound 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 11.29.13

This SSF show featured DOWNBEAT Sound with MC Tony Screw aka Downbeat the Ruler + DJ Chris. Also on the show, BLACK SCORPIO with DJ Fadda Jack, and REBEL TONE SOUND with DJ Newby Blacka… This

show was most enjoyable! Sound System Fridays was blessed with two veteran foundation Sounds – Downbeat and Black Scorpio. Both Sounds were in town to take part in ‘Legends of Dancehall’ – a half dance/half award show that was happening at the JCA later on that night. Little did Downbeat and Black Scorpio know that they would be recognized and honoured for their contributions over the years with a Lifetime Achievement Award courtesy of King Turbo.

Black Scorpio and Downbeat’s stay was short, but, sweet. Both Sounds gave the massive a taste of some of their classic dubs from the past right up until the present whilst MC’ing. I was in total awe! I didn’t know just how deep their boxes ran, I just knew about their contributions to the industry – owning a Sound System and holding producer credits. I was looking forward to interviewing these legendary cats live and direct!

Unfortunately, both Sounds had to leave before midnight for their performance at the JCA. What a shame!  I was so looking forward to doing my usual interview, especially with these guys – legends! Big Up Newby who held it down until the end of the show! He picked up the vibes and took us to a higher level.

Big Up Jahmin of King Turbo for securing the Sounds and for bringing them down to the ReggaeMania studio! Big Up Klymaxx Sound as well as Eclipse Sound – they passed through, but, did not play. Fulljoy

DECEMBER 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 12.20.13

This SSF show featured KLYMAXX Sound with MC Squidley and DJ Specialis. Special guests performers  include; Jermaine Miller, Gary, D. Millia, Bugsy Killa, Ginnah, Father Digital, and Reese BaddaThis show

featured guest Sound, Klymaxx – hot on the heels of their King of the Ring and Fully Loaded victories!  After some early juggling by yours truly, Klymaxx finally arrived!  There’s not too much to report in this review, other than this would be the last Sound System Fridays show with guest sounds for 2013. Klymaxx has been a past guest Sound on Sound System Fridays, so, the pressure wasn’t on – they were riding high after their recent conquests and just wanted to have fun. No bragging nor boasting, just a night full of good vibes. Big Up Squidley, Specialis, Gary and artistes, Reese Badda and Jermaine Miller! Enjoy the Podcast!

DJ Ron Nelson

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 12.27.13

This SSF show featured DJ RON NELSON due to a cancellation. No recording sorry.

JANUARY 2014

Noble Works Sound 2014

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 01.24.14

This SSF show featured NOBLE WORKS [DJ Doug Skillmore] and CUMTRAXX [MC Bones + DJ Dave]… Noble Works started off the juggling on Sound System Fridays, big up Ian and  Skillmore. They had been there

before, and as professionals in their craft, they arrived just a few minutes after the 9pm kick off time to deliver another great performance on the show. Noble Works were slotted into the Friday Night show as a replacement for Mystic, originally scheduled but cancelled a few days earlier by the promoter of Modern Warfare, Toronto’s first Soundclash for 2014 scheduled for Hickory House the following Friday January 31st. Noble Works is scheduled as opening Sound for the clash, but are not in the clash itself. Just like their first appearance on Sound System Fridays, they impressed the critics, listeners and viewers in the chat room who were over complimentary about the Noble Works performance, their dedication to Canadian artists, and their dub box depth, while highlighting the fact that they arrived on time for the show.

Cumtraxx was the next Sound to appear, and would be the only Sound participating in clashing at Modern Warfare that would show up for the show (big up Bones and Dave for repping). Twin Starr was represented by Peasah and Roman, but Twin Star DJ-micsman Jr. D wasn’t there nor was the Twin Starr dubbox. Cumtraxx also had been at Sound System Fridays on various occasions, and they were consistent in their dub plate, speech and vibe delivery. Big them up also for working with Jamiaca’s Navino, who passed through courtesy of the promoter Phace who had him scheduled in concert the following night in Brantford. Big up Squidley (Klymax), and Sadiq, Next week, Exile 1 is scheduled to play on Sound System Fridays. Enjoy the Podcast.

FEBRUARY 2014

Rebel Tone Sound

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 02.07.14

This SSF show featured REBEL TONE Sound with DJ NewbyCheck out DJ Newby representing his Rebel Tone Sound fresh off his Modern Warfare victory over Cumtraxx and Twin Star Sounds. Newby loves playing

music, and stated to me that he was a “baby” when he won World Clash (2002), and back then, he had only a “handful” of dubs compared to today where he has “dubs to spare”. This was a good show, and Newby was not afraid to talk the talk and further rub salt into the wounds of the opponents that he had recently defeated in both Modern Warfare and Tapout sound clashes. A good little interview closed of the show, with Newby alongside newest Rebel Tone recruit “Blackatone” playing a little over two hours. Enjoy the Podcast.

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 02.14.14

This ReggaeMania.com Sound System Fridays show featured GIDEON Sound with DJ CulchaDJ Culcha repped his Gideon Sound with new music and fresh just-back-from Jamaica vibes on last week’s Sound

System Fridays broadcast. I admit, I was already hyped after hearing DJ Culcha new music on his Rebel Music Radio Show on the previous Thursday (Regent Radio), so it made complete sense to invite him down.  Besides, DJ Culcha had already repped on ReggaeMania before, about a year ago, and had nothing to prove. His intent was to present a show that was exciting yet not all about dub plates, which may be disappointing to some, but not to me.That’s because I love new music, although I consider much of what I have to play disposable after the music not standing the test of time.

Hearing DJ Culcha play his new music was refreshing to say the least (it’s amazing what spending time in Yard can do to a selector), and on this night, DJ Culcha was on with his the majority of his mixing and selecting. He is full of information about artists, Sounds and news information on what’s gwaaning in Yard and what he was pesonally doing there himself, so it is no surprise that the interview following DJ Culcha’s DJ performance was entertaining as well as educational.  Enjoy the Podcast, and big up DJ Culcha and Gideon Sound for representing on ReggaeMania.com Sound System Fridays!

King Turbo Ricky Turbo

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 02.21.14

This SSF show featured KING TURBO Sound with Ricky Turbo and performing live; Mally Bless + Nkrumah… King Turbo and I have a lot of history. This Sound was birthed in Scarborough in 1988-1989, and has since

then gone on to represent Canada on an international level with one of the most expensive dub plate collections possessed by any Clash Sound (rumoured to be worth close to three-quarter of a million dollars!). When I was first introduced to the Sound, it was a young Ricky Turbo (Metro) and Andrew (Slingshot) that were masters of the controls. These two entrepreneurs had involuntarily become caught up into a new and vibrant dancehall music scene that was sweeping Canada and North America. With the decision to create King Turbo, Metro and Sling Shot had now planted the seeds into creating a Sound purposed to represent Canada in the world of Soundclash, juggling, and musical edutainment from then until now.

In the years that transpired, King Turbo has grown to become one of North America’s most potent Sounds. But as the King Turbo family grew and contemplated their direction into the future, there were internal issues, and it seemed Metro and Slingshot could not agree about the future of King Turbo. Ultimately, this would result in an internal split and two King Turbos. Ricky Turbo exited from the camp started playing solo, his ‘own’ King Turbo Sound. Andrew would continue with his own King Turbo Sound, backed by Jahmin, Suspence, Otoole, Spex, Fatal, and (later) King Sharpe (and others I may have missed).

As far as the streets were concerned, most of King Turbo’s fans were locked out of what was truly going on behind the scenes during these transition periods. Ricky Turbo has always believed that as co-founder of King Turbo, nobody had the right to stop him from playing under the King Turbo name since that truly belonged to him and could never be taken away. Describing Ricky Turbos’ plight as ‘bitter’ may even be an understatement, but with a limited collection of King Turbo dubs, has been able to carry the King Turbo torch here and abroad, taking dates in non-conflicting territories that his former crew would not follow.

At present, it may appear that Ricky Turbo has been content with the slice of the pie ‘given’ to him, but that is the farthest thing from the truth, because Ricky has been witnessing the other side of King Turbo, and he is not impressed with the way the ‘man dem’ has been dealing with ‘his’ King Turbo Sound. Some may argue that ‘why’ should he care, but deep down, division or not, break up or not, feelings or not, Ricky can’t help but care, which is why he can no longer hold back his disgust with the present state of the ‘other side’ of the present day King Turbo. You’ll hear it all when you listen to this Podcast, as it seemed this show offered some kind of physiological counselling for Ricky Turbo, who poured his heart out on the mic.

Andrew, on the other side, has been marching his King Turbo Sound forward into the present. He has stated before that there is only ‘one’ King Turbo, and although he hasn’t been able to stop it, has never been happy with Ricky Turbo still to this day, playing his sound under the auspices of the King Turbo name. Despite what Ricky Turbo might feel or claim, when one talks to Andrew, they hear a different story, leaving one wanting to pull out their hair because in the end, there’s nothing one can do to make these two men agree. So frustrating!

So while Ricky Turbo continues to make noise abroad, and concentrates on carrying the King Turbo torch primarily in foreign markets, Andrew, with little opposition from Ricky, has positioned his King Turbo Sound to reap the benefits here, backed by great radio publicity with DJ Spex keeping the King Turbo brand alive with his constant on-air plugging of King Turbo, endorsing them as Canada’s “number one sound” when hosting his radio shows on commercial stations Flow 93.5 FM and presently G98 FM in Toronto. Fair or not, he get’s to play the latest and most classic King Turbo dubs at leisure to the delight of the massive, and other Sounds in Toronto are not in the position to do this.

But wait there’s more, while Spex controls the commercial FM reggae airwaves, Andrew has seeds planted in King Turbo’s community radio program, where classic King Turbo dubs are brandished on their Morning Ride Radio Program, heard weekly on Toronto’s CIUT FM. As far as DJ Bookings – King Turbo would take juggling dates and even the odd clash now and then, but gone is the Ricky Turbo styled agenda of aiming to make King Turbo a clash sound of the future. Still, King Turbo has been loved by so many, and even today, the city is theirs for the taking, if only they could get it right and be fearless and competitive in the Sound Clash arena – perhaps easier said than done.

In a classic ‘battle’ of the two King Turbos, it seems that in this modern day, Ricky Turbo, standing alone, has rebounded to make enough noise as a selector to now be catching the attention of the Canadian and American markets, especially in New York and here in Toronto. This hasn’t been the case for Andrew’s King Turbo Sound of late. Despite being backed by a financier who spends more money than Mighty Crown when it comes to dub cutting, the King Turbo fan base has been fed up with the lack of progress for Turbo in the Sound Clash arena.

Today’s King Turbo Sound Clash fans are saying ‘forget the politics’ and ‘gimme the war!’, but Andrew’s King Turbo has struggled to find a mic talker who can replace Ricky Turbo, and the old King Turbo loyalists are speedily disappearing with an old generation going out and a new one coming in. Until an ample MC is found for Andrew’s King Turbo, it will appear that Ricky Turbo may have the last laugh as he’s forced to watch a King Turbo that he is not a part of limping through the present. The massive however, are not laughing – they’re fed up and are no longer asking but demanding that ‘the real King Turbo please stand up’!

I hope you enjoy this Podcast. I found Ricky Turbo to be a lively and exciting guest. When it comes to having something to say, Ricky Turbo has been the most revealing and outspoken compared to any previous guests, and his King Turbo dubs were brought to life with good introductions and speeches in between. People in the Chat Room were not their critical selves, cheering on Ricky Turbo, asking King Sharpe to “quit”, and describing Ricky as the ‘answer’ and ‘missing link’ for their dreams of there one day being only one King Turbo with founders Andrew and Ricky back at the controls. Ricky talked the talk, and was not shying away from dissing any sounds he wanted while answering any questions asked, including the accusation that he had once smoked crack, and what it would take for he and Andrew to start working together again.

Big up Ricky Turbo for appearing on Sound System Fridays. Politically, this was a good move for him – the massive deserved to hear the ‘Ricky Turbo side of the story’, as it’s never been told before. A special thanks to recording artists Elijah, Mally Bless and Nkrumah who performed live on Sound System Fridays and brought great vibes to the show. These three artists had made appearances on Sound System Fridays before, and all delivered excellent performances. Big up Shane and DJ Chocolate as well, who helped with it all and took a few pics for me too! And big up all of the massive who passed through ReggaeMania even though I didn’t get some of your names. Enjoy the Podcast.

Rebel Tone Sound 2013

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 02.28.14

This SSF show featured DJ CHRIS DUBBS and STEP-A-CHOICE Sound [MC Lumba GDJ Itchy#1 + Kirk]. REBEL TONE Sound [DJ Newbie + Blacka Tone] and BLACK MAGIC [DJ Wiggums] is also in the place. This

was the final episode of Sound System Fridays, and soon after, I would vacate the studio-office for new endeavours… Thanks to Step-a-Choice, Rebel Tone, Black Magic and Chris Dubbs for repping on this Friday Night Show. I’m guilty of putting this line up together on the same day – wasn’t sure if I was going to do a show as Sound System Fridays was “scheduled” to close, and this would be the last show I thought (it would turn out to be the second last). Not much to say about this night, as nobody was there with anything to “prove”.

Step-a-Choice are always entertaining and came to Sound System Fridays prepared with a positive vibe and a refreshing set of dubs appropriate for the radio. Rebel Tone was his usual self, and alongside Blacka Tone, delivered a nice set with interesting talk. Chris Dubbs was more concerned with playing than talking, yet proved to be an interesting host. Overall, it was a night of good musical vibes and decent conversation, as the show cheated time and continued beyond the midnight hour. Enjoy the Podcast.

SOUND SYSTEM FRIDAYS 03.07.14

This final SSF show featured Brimstone Gold, Black Magic, Chris Dubbs…Honestly, gotta listen back to this podcast to give this show and the guests proper credit … I was being interviewed by Chris Dubbs here…

interesting…last week’s show was supposed to be the final SSF episode, but seems we were able to squeeze in one last show.
