This SSF show featured MILITARY Sound with DJ Fatkat and very special guest Michie Mee performing live…Tonight’s show was entertaining from start to finish – starring DJ Fat Kat of Military Sound (Allan Ladd
couldn’t make it) and Canada’s own Michie Mee. I liked how FatKat paced himself – upping the tempo, bit by bit, whilst delivering a good balance of dubs, new riddims and hit singles spiced right with jingles and sound effects. He even took to the mic here and there! FatKat’s experience showed – he ran the numbers (proven by the record amount of people tuned in since the start of Sound System Fridays). Michie Mee deserves some of that credit too. As soon as she arrived, the vibes tun up! Once she got hold of the mic, it was over – she mashed it up! Proving, yet again, why she’s Canada’s premiere female Hip-hop ‘n Reggae DJ. Enjoy the show!
This SSF show featured ROOTSMAN Sound [MC Ranger + DJ Chucky Starr], with special guest artists, Stallion and Nkrumah performing live…Rootsman Sound was the guest sound this week for Sound
System Fridays. They were running late due to traffic problems so I played for the first fifty minutes until they arrived. Rootsman is a big crew – they have eight soldiers in it. Reppin’ tonight for Rootsman Sound – Ranger, Chuckie and Stallion alongside guest artiste, Nkrumah (who made his first appearance here 09.14.12 with DJ Culcha of Gideon Sound). Chuckie brought real vibes to the studio and Ranger hosted as if he was warming up the crowd before a big clash. They dropped dubs (no 45’s) – from their first chune, until their last. I liked it! The vibes were nice – nuff jokes too! Rootsman played well and talked the talk. They demonstrated that they have improved as a sound and matured as businessmen. Big up Rootsman Sound and Nkrumah! Enjoy the vibes!
This SSF show featured SOUL SURVIVAL Sound with DJ Pablo, MC Bumpy Rage + Jr Selector, with special guest artists, Lindo P., Michael Buckley and I-Brilliance performing live… Big up Soul Survival Sound! – MC
Bumpy Rage and DJ Junior Selector delivered an intense delivery of dub plates, mixing and patter that gave anyone listening an exciting feeling of being inside of a sound clash! After hearing a few minutes of this sound play, it was obvious that they had a plan – it was to be the first Sound on Sound System Fridays to play all dubs (no 45’s) – Rootsman was the first sound to drop all dubs, but, did so for only two hours and ten minutes. This is very interesting because Sounds that pass through ReggaeManiaRadio – Sound System Fridays have no obligation to do so. They have free reign when it comes to what they play, what they say and who they invite down. So, the choice of playing all dubs comes down to a level of difficulty that each sound sets for themselves.
Soul Survival played all dubs and even the toughest critics had to admit afterwards that they did so rather flawlessly. Sounds that are featured each and every Friday are also asked to invite an artist(s) to perform live with them – this is part of their agreement in securing a spot on ReggaeManiaRadio – Sound System Fridays. I have to give Soul Survival props for thinking through their opportunity and delivering three very fine artists as guest performers – Lindo P., I Brilliance and a stunner, Jamaica’s Michael Buckley (I still don’t know how they found him!). What an honour!
This night was hardcore to the max – ‘uncensored’ in its entirety! I am still chuckling when I think back at Lindo P. tapping me on the shoulder – he said, “Wow! Ron, we can curse – maddd!”. At one point, I looked around and I swear, over a dozen men were in my studio! Everybody was enjoying themselves and having fun. Nuff niceness!
I Brilliance sounded better than I’ve ever heard him. I’m being totally honest when I say this, Lindo P. being next to him hyped him up. Jamaica’s veteran artiste, Michael Buckley was calm, cool and collected when he performed and his voice…he has been blessed with a ‘golden’ voice – nothing more needs to be said. Big up Soul Survival and all of their performing artists – a bright future awaits you all! Enjoy the show!
This SSF show featured HEATWAVE Sound with DJ Spragga Roots…Heatwave originally started out as a Kingston, Jamaica sound in the early 1980s. Certain things happened along the way, and now Heatwave —
founded by the legendary Bobby Digital — resides here in Canada, with Spragga Roots at the controls (and sometimes Lindo P). If you love reggae classics from the ’80s and ’90s — Shabba, Ninja Man, Sanchez, and more — this is the sound where you might hear exclusive dubs from those legendary artists that you’ve never heard before.
Selector Spragga Roots did an excellent job delivering a three-hour mix that took listeners back in time — to an era when dancehall was fresh, new, exciting, and unpredictable. Lindo P was supposed to be the guest artist but couldn’t make it down, performing at two different places that night, I might add.
Now, Spragga isn’t what you’d call a ‘mixing DJ’, and in the past, I’ve criticized DJs for that. But on this night, because of the exclusivity of the music and Spragga’s intimate knowledge of every single dub he played, I let it slide. The vibes were right — it felt like being back in Jamaica, at a big dance where the sound was holding it down before the action started. Big up Spragga Roots for hosting Sound System Fridays! Enjoy the sweet, sweet sounds of yesteryear!
This SSF show featured GUNZ N’ ROZEZ Sound with beautiful DJ Tasha Rozez…Tasha Rozez represented Gunz’N’Rozez by playing hard. Not only is she the world’s number one female selector and clash champion,
she’s also Canada’s most traveled ‘soundman’ — and the first female to ever host Sound System Fridays. After a 10 PM start, Tasha unleashed a heavy set of exclusive dubs and specials, many of which we hadn’t heard from her in a long time. After all, it was Sound System Fridays — she could play and say whatever she pleased.
Tasha wasn’t in a talkative mood, so the ‘regular speech’ usually heard in the dancehalls was put aside. Her focus was clear: rinse Gunz’N’Rozez dubs for the fans. It took a little while for her to lock into a groove — her style felt a bit ‘all over the place’ at first — but once she got comfortable, Tasha delivered a tight set of dubs and 45s that made the audience feel like they were right in the prime of an electrifying reggae dance.
So, did Tasha have fun? The answer: Yes! She went a full 30 minutes past the show’s scheduled end time (midnight), despite needing to change outfits and drive immediately after to play at On The Roxx.
Big up Tasha Rozez for representing strong on ReggaeManiaRadio! To date, she’s tied the record (previously set by FatKat of Military) for the most people watching on Ustream simultaneously — and holding that number for the longest time!
