This SSF show featured 6 Sounds; GIDEON Sound [DJ Culcha] and KLYMAXX Sound, HEAVYWEIGHT Sound, DJ CHRIS DUBBS, LEXUS SUPREME and DYCE LOCKE… Our one-year anniversary show was a blast despite
last minute bookings the day of! Yes, it’s been a whole year since Sound System Fridays was launched – what a year! A big ‘thanks’ goes out to all of the Sounds that represented – in order of appearance…Gideon Sound (DJ Culcha), Climax Sound (Gary, Specialis, Squidly and Fada Digital), Heavyweight Sound (Ringo and Ron-C), Chris Dubbs (Morning Ride), Lexus Supreme (Dyce Locke) and Heatwave (Spragga Roots) who showed up but didn’t play.
Gideon Sound started the show with some great new music – 45’s as well as dubs. When it comes to the International Dancehall Scene, DJ Culcha is always on the up and up and had plenty to chat bout. He not only played well, he informed us too! DJ Culcha appeared to be having lots of fun and even stuck around after his segment was done to network and socialize in the hallway. DJ Culcha is part of the Rebel Music radio show, heard live on ReggaeMania Radio and Regent Radio every Thursday from 7:30 – 10:00 PM.
Climax Sound was up next. This crew was riding high – not only were they invited to come down and play on ReggaeManiaRadio for our first anniversary, but, they had just found out that they were added to the Fully Loaded Metamorphosis Sound clash (Friday, December 6, 2013 @ On The Rox) roster as the fourteenth Sound! Climax Sound would also be clashing the following week at the Rising Stars Sound clash @ Hickory House, so, at the very least, this would be good practice for them. This opportunity allowed them to show ‘all’ that their dub box is indeed ‘deep’ and that they have speeches to spare despite the upcoming clash. Big Up Climax Sound, you never fail to represent!
Next in line, Heavyweight Sound. A Sound that was one of Scarborough’s biggest Sounds back in the day, they even gave King Turbo and Red Flame Sound a run for their money. Heavyweight Sound took us back to the glory days and dropped dubs from the 90s – it was a real pleasure to see them in action and to hear them too! Their set was steady. It’s almost as if they were playing it safe for their first appearance on ReggaeManiaRadio, which by the way, is okay if they were.
At the end of their performance, I heard Ron-C say “That was fun,” he had a smirk on his face – telling. We will be seeing more of Heavyweight Sound in the future, it’s just a matter of time. Having said that, I am pleased to announce the return of Heavyweight Sound – they are back and ready for hire! While juggling for now, they will continue to rebuild their box and re-enter the dubplate business to the point of satisfaction, then hopefully we’ll see them back in the Sound clash arena. Big Up Ron-C and Ringo! Welcome back Heavyweight!
Up next, Chris Dubbs. He represented with a nice set of music and played some pretty good dub plates too. I remember Chris Dubbs telling me after that people had no idea that he even had any dubs let alone being a serious collector of them. Little did they know, that Chris Dubbs, who appears to be harmless and humble, is actually a monster! Sorry to bus your ‘secret’ Chris Dubbs, but, you are no longer ‘moving in silence’ (LOL), everybody knows now that you are collecting dubs to ‘kill’ Sounds sooner or later! Big Up Chris Dubbs, I look forward to seeing you in Sound clash action!
Last but not least, Big Up Dyce Locke! He anchored the show with some artical Lexus Supreme dub plates backed by honest speeches. He targeted Sounds that just sit on their arsenal of dub plates and don’t clash with any consistency. Dyce Locke knows who he was referring to…it still seems like only a short time has passed since he was a member of the mighty King Turbo Sound. I’m sure there are some mixed feelings as he eventually left and joined Lexus Supreme.
I liked Dyce Locke’s attitude, he is young and rarin’ to go – ready to clash! Ironically, that night, he insisted that I add Lexus Supreme as the fifteenth Sound for Fully Loaded Metamorphosis. I told him to talk to Bling (owner) first as I was sure he would see things differently and would not allow Lexus Supreme to participate. No need to say in the end who was right – LOL. Big Up Dyce Locke same way! That’s what I’m talking about, real soundmen who are ready to clash at will because it’s in their blood! Big Up Fine China whose vibe and simple presence in the studio niced up the place! Big Up DJ Soul Sistah who also passed through for a visit too! I had fun and so did everyone else in the studio and hallway.
This SSF show featured 3 Sounds; EXCTACY Sound [DJ Fadda Morris] and HALLO POINT Sound [MC Hype Ras + DJ Dino + Gary, and CUMTRAXX Sound [MC BONES + DJ Dave + Tall Man]... I enjoyed this
Sound System Fridays show featuring special guests (in order of appearance) Extacy Sound (Fadda Morris), Hallow Point and Cumtraxx. All three Sounds will be partaking in the ‘Rising Stars’ Sound clash that happens at Hickory House Friday, September 20, 2013 with yours truly hosting and Extacy Sound doing the early juggling. This will be the first official clash that Hallow Point will be competing at and Cumtraxx is standing strong – ready to ‘roll’ over everyone and everything.
The night would prove to be interesting. Sounds who are going to ‘war’ don’t usually meet on common ground to exercise playing dubs before clashing it out. Make no mistake, Sound System Fridays is the night to introduce the listening and viewing massive to your Sound, to show ’em what you got – let them know which Sound have chunes! Sounds that were ‘tuned’ in got an early feel for what’s to come next Friday.
Big Up Extacy Sound, I’ve haven’t heard Fadda Morris play in years! He had no problem holding tings down for his portion of the broadcast. Fadda Morris dropped some nice dubs and even called out a few Sound names. While playing admirably, Fadda Morris did not talk the mic and had no mic man present. His set was smoof – well programmed and presented. He gets a passing grade from me, but, in true Sound clash fashion, I rate the real thing – a Sound that combines the ‘best’ of in speech alongside ‘classic’ dubs. See you down the road Fadda Morris!
Big Up Dino, Hype Ras and Gary! Hallow Point Sound is new and this upcoming clash will mark their first foray in the clash arena. I was excited to see them perform and hear what they had to say and play (dub wise). I had seen Dino in clash action before and I remember being extremely impressed with what I saw – his performance. Playing alongside Cumtraxx one week before the big event was probably the best thing for Hallow Point.
Other than dropping a few good dubs, Hallow Point’s performance was substandard. To begin with, there was no chemistry between MC Hype Ras and Dino – clearly, the two of them were in completely different worlds and on the MC’ing front, Hype Ras had nothing to say. I also saw no ‘killer’ instinct in them, unlike Cumtraxx, who had speeches galore and had no problem going after Hallow Point during their set. Later on in the show, I gave each Sound an additional six minutes to play and Hallow Point did nothing with that time.
To their defense, Hallow Point management was in the house and claimed that this was part of their game plan and that the massive would see their true ‘clash’ colours come clash time – ‘Rising Stars’ Sound clash – Friday, September 20, 2013 at Hickory House.
Last but not least, Cumtraxx. I like this Sound, I’m just not fond of their name. This Sound has great chemistry and all of their members are ripe – each of them know their place and how to execute their roles within the Sound. Their confidence was oozing out all over the place all night long – they dropped loads of dubs and had heaps o’ speeches. It was clear to Cumtraxx Sound that the ‘clash’ had already started and that this opportunity was not to be wasted.
Nuff jokes – laughter ensued! Cumtraxx were so excited, they just couldn’t hide it – they were ready to ‘kill’ anything and everything, including me – LOL! Giving them an additional six minutes to play before the end of the show was the icing on the cake – they brought it hard and thensome! This was the closest thing to a real clash that we’ve seen on Sound System Fridays and despite it being a walkover, I enjoyed it! The loud conversations emanating from the hallways outside of the studio were a testament to the fact that, come clash time, for better or worse, tonight’s antics would be remembered. Big Up Cumtraxx Sound for bringing the vibes! Enjoy the Podcast!
This SSF show featured HOLLOW POINT Sound [MC Hype Ras + DJ Dino]. A Special live performant by Peter Rankin… Hallow Point Sound hosted Sound System Fridays this past Friday – fresh off their ‘Rising Stars’
Sound clash win at Hickory House. Hallow Point believed deep down that they would take the trophy, boldly telling me so a week prior to the clash in a private conversation. Big Up the crew – Dino, Hype Ras and Gary! They showed up on time, ready to play – reppin’ for the Hallow Point fam and did so for three hours plus.
It was an aight show for Hallow Point, who stated “nuttin’ nuh play yet” two hours into their three hour show. Dino was laid back, a little more confident now about using his highly criticized Itch laptop software to play Hallow Point’s music. I would like to provide a detailed analysis of this Sound’s musical presentation at Sound System Fridays, but, honestly, from where I stood, it didn’t seem to matter.
People at our ReggaeMania Radio studio were in a festive mood and were there for a celebration – this was Hallow Point’s victory party of sorts and the ‘bar’ it seemed, was fully stocked! Ironically, Hallow Point had been booked to play Sound System Fridays two weeks prior to their ‘Rising Stars’ clash win – win or lose, we were going to see them perform. Congratulations to Hallow Point Sound – this was their first clash ever and they pulled it off – victory! Nobody remembers who comes in 2nd Place.
Big Up the guests in the studio – Big Dawy from Bassline Sound, Maput and Danny (Management), Shefton, Hamma from Lion Heart Sound, Champu, Rondine, Horace, Gaza and one more person – Mr. Peter Rankin – the live artiste who’s performance was extraordinary! Watch the podcast and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. Peter Rankin is a veteran artiste who has been spending most of his time in Jamaica, people here forgot just how talented this artiste is, but, not anymore – peep the video! Once again, Big Up Hallow Point Sound, their journey has just begun!
