2013 DANCEHALL-REGGAE TOPS

January 2013 Reggae Tops

Jah Cure’s “That Girl” tops January 2013 Reggae Chart

Busy Signal’s “Reggae Music Again” is knocked down to the number two position by Jah Cure’s “That Girl” – a beautiful song that I personally love so much. Beres Hammond’s “Dancing Beauty” (riding the same riddim as

“Reggae Music Again”) slips down the chart to number five, but, his “In My Arms” chune (noiceee) moved up to occupy the fourth spot.  Another Hammond also rose up the chart – moving from position ten to number seven in Lenn Hammond’s “Love You With Honor”, while Chino’s “By My Side” is also impressive, moving from number nine to number six.

New on the chart is Anuhea / Tarrus Riley’s “Only Man In The World” in at number nine.  One of my favourite new songs entered our Top 10 Reggae Chart holding the number three spot – that would be Chronixx with a beautifully produced classic – “They Don’t Know”.  Exiting the chart is Christopher Martin’s “What Can I Do Without A Woman”, Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley’s “Affairs of the Heart” and Tarrus Riley / Allaine’s “Cut Dem Off”.

January 2013 Tops 20 Canadian

Michie Mee’s ‘Bahd Gyal’ tops January 2013 Top 20 Canadian

Topping this month’s chart is Toronto’s own Michie ‘Bahd Gyal’ Mee with “Bahd Gyal Bubble” (a song I’ll take credit for ‘breaking’ in the T Dot!), sliding up from number four last month to the number one spot and

knocking out former chart topper “Glasses Dark” (Terminal DG) into the number two spot.  Just over a week ago, Michie ‘officially’ released a cool music video for “Bahd Gyal Bubble”, ensuring longer life for the track in this fast-moving Dancehall Industry.  Big Up Smoke Shop Productions, their Mad Rass Riddimhas got to be the best Canadian Riddim for the year.  Michie Mee’s “Bahd Gyal Bubble” may have also ensured extended life for the riddim, but, the riddim has also ensured extended life for Michie Mee as she has now silenced all critics with this great piece of work.  She is a force to be reckoned with in the market – other female MC’s better look out, Michie Mee is back – don’t underestimate Canada’s first Queen of Hip-hop!

One of the year’s most original songs (and one of my favourites), “Am Twinkling” (Father Price / Eyesus / Fire Lion) moves up from number five to number three, while Exco Levi’s “Dutchie Wah Food” makes a big jump from number fourteen to number four.  Ammoye’s “Radio”, a former chart topper, still won’t go away proving to be one of the better produced classics of the year and sliding down from number two to number five on our chart.  Her “Pick Me Up” tune has now made an exit from the chart, after holding down the number eleven spot last month.  Ammoye continues to throw punches with the debut of “Baby It’s You”, a cute little ballad taking over position number eight.

Hanging on right behind Ammoye is Nkrumah with “Reggaemylytis”, followed by Kaisha Lee’s “Clean Heart Order”, another favourite of mine also on Smoke Shop’s Mad Rass Riddim.  Terminal DG’s “Pure Chat” is holding down spot number ten.  Give Canada’s Steele some props for quietly sliding up the chart – “Hanging On” now occupies spot number six, while his second entry “She Believes In Me” holds down the number eleven spot.  Fire Lion’s “Bazzle And I Know It”, Sample King’s “Jam Dung Gangnam Style” and Chuckle Berry’s “Win Gal” all slid down to take the number twelve, thirteen and fourteen spots.  Former chart t0pper Shalli holds onto spot number sixteen with “I Fly” and Belinda is one slot ahead with “Found The One”.  Eyesus (solo) takes the number seventeen spot with “Good Friend” and Faze’s new track – “Inna Church” lands in spot eighteen.  New to the chart and taking spot nineteen is G Maffiah with “Mi Wah Yuh Love” and Tasha T has a new release – “In A Di Jungle” and it sits at number twenty.

February 2013 Reggae Tops

Jah Cure’s “That Girl” tops February 2013 Reggae Chart

Our Top 10 Reggae Chart champ this month is Jah Cure with “That Girl” – a repeat chart holder.  Behind him is Chronixx with “They Don’t Know” (currently, my favourite Reggae song) – jus’ one of three choice chunes

from Chronixx.  He’s taking the world by storm!

In at number three, we welcome back – Courtney John with “Born To Fly” – a song with a wicked dub mix.  Squeezing into number four is Chronixx’s popular “Behind Curtain” tune and “Neighborhood Girl” trails behind at number five – a nice cover of John Holt’s “Sweetie” creatively modified by Jemere Morgan.

One of Reggae’s most consistent artists is Beres Hammond, his “In My Arms” tune sits at number six and Busy Signal’s “Reggae Music Again” occupies spot number seven.  In at the number eight spot – Chino’s “By My Side” and number nine goes to Chronixx with “Here Comes Trouble” – one of his nicer tunes.  Last but not least, the number ten spot is held by Lenn Hammond with “Love You With Honour”.

February 2013 Top 20 Canadian

Michie Mee’s ‘Bahd Gyal’ tops February Top 20 Canadian

Topping our Top 20 Canadian Chart for the second consecutive month is the lovely and talented Michie ‘Bahd Gyal’ Mee.  What a comeback story for Canada’s Rap and Reggae Queen!  Her track ‘Bahd Gyal Bubble’ is tight all around (vocal + production wise) which makes for a very powerful

chune – her raw lyrics combined with her element of style (Rapping and Toasting) takes the song to another level.  The track is so danceable and it stands up to any Jamaican riddim trying to test it!  Canada anxiously awaits another song from Michie and her producer at Smoke Shop Productions.

While Michie rules our chart, Terminal DG’s “Glasses Dark” has slipped down to the number three spot after holding down the number two spot in January and the number one spot in December.  The number two spot goes to Juno nominee Exco Levi with “Dutchie Wah Food” and having dropped from the number three spot to number five is “Am Twinkling” (Father Price / Eyesus / Fire Lion) – still one of my favourite songs!

Moving up from number eight to our number four spot is Kaisha Lee’s “Clean Heart Order”, sharing the same dope riddim that backed Michie Mee’s – ‘Bahd Gyal Bubble’ courtesy of Smoke Shop Productions.  I like Kaisha’s raw vocals on this particular song, she steps outside ‘the box’ and goes for it.

Another Juno nominee graces our chart – Ammoye.  She has dropped two positions as “Radio” now slips from number five to number seven.  Congrats to Ammoye on her nomination!  Big Up Steele as he has two songs on our chart! – his song, “She Believes In Me” rose to number six from number eleven and his “Hanging On” track has slipped from number six to number eleven.  Moving up from number fourteen to the number eight spot is Chuckle Berry’s “Wine Gal” and maintaining its number nine position is Ammoye with “Baby It’s You” – a beautiful track.  Dropping from the number seven spot to number ten is “Reggaemylytis” by Nkrumah.

Hanging on and in spot thirteen is Fire Lion with “Bazzle And I Know It”, Shalli with “I Fly” in at number fourteen, Terminal DG with “Pure Chat” at sixteen and Tasha T with “In A Di Jungle” taking the number eighteen spot.

New on the chart this month is Terminal DG’s “Street Level” (that makes three!), Def Shade’s “Sick Head”, Maja Current’s “Mama” and Sean Bush’s “Nah Mek Dem Stress Me” as well as Tony Anthony’s “Ecstasy”.  Exiting from our chart are G Maffiah’s “Mi Wah Yuh Love”, Sample King’s “Jam Dung Gangnam Style”, Belinda Brady’s “Found The One”, Eyesus’s “Good Friend” and Faze’s “Inna Church”.

March 2013 Dancehall Tops

Chronixx Tops March 2013 Reggae

Big Up Chronixx – he tops this month’s Top 10 Reggae Chart and has two other songs that are steadily climbing up the chart too!  He’s the ‘next one’ according to the scene DJs and Sound Systems and why not?, we could

use a ‘saviour’ right about now.

Exco Levi “Dutchie Wah Food” tops March 2013 Canadian Chart

The Canadian Reggae Scene has been somewhat stagnant as of late re: recording and releasing new music.  The music that is being released, i’m jus’ not feeling it.  So, with that in mind, I’ve decided to downscale this

month’s chart to a Top 10 Canadian Reggae Chart vs a Top 20 chart – this way, it’s fair to all!  Once the scene picks up again, I will reinstate the Top 20 chart.

Gone from our March chart are the following artists and their former February 2013 Top 20 Chart Position…

#5 Am Twinkling – Father Price / Eyesus / Fire Lion
#8 Wine Gal – Chuckle Berry
#12 Ecstasy – Tony Anthony
#13 Bazzle And I Know It – Fire Lion
#14 I Fly – Shalli
#15 Nah Mek Dem Stress Me – Sean Bush
#16 Pure Chat – Terminal DG
#17 Sick Head – Def Shade
#18 In A Di Jungle – Tasha T
#20 Mama – Maja Current

New this month – Ras Demo aka Demoliton Man UK (originally based out of London, but, resides in Canada now) in the number ten spot with “Dance (Mek You Rock)” – one of the two new songs to make it onto the chart.

Postion number nine goes to Toronto’s Kim Davis, who is featured alongside Beenie Man for a catchy tune entitled “So Hot”.  I look forward to the video for this one.

Even though this song may seem dated, “Hanging On” by Steele moves up from its former position, number eleven, to the number eight spot.  This well constructed song is jus’ one of two Steele songs that is featured on our Top 10 chart – way to go Steele!

Sitting firmly in its number seven spot (for two consecutive months) is Juno nominated songstress, Ammoye with “Radio”.  A song which formerly occupied the number one spot on our Top 20 Canadian chart.  Just like Steele, Ammoye also has two songs on this month’s chart.

Making the biggest jump from the February Chart at number nineteen, to the number six position, is Terminal DG with “Street Level”. Terminal DG is charted back to back – his catchy hit tune, “Glasses Dark” takes the number five spot.

Song number four features last month’s chart topper – Michie Mee’s “Bahd Gyal Bubble”  which has topped the charts for two months in a row.

In spot number three, we see Ammoye’s second chart entry with “Baby It’s You”, a nice mellow tune that has grown on me after some time.  Good Luck come Juno night!

Song number two sees Canada’s Steele with the Kenny Rogers original “She Believes In Me” masterfully recrafted and performed.

Topping our chart this month is one of Canada’s best writers and lyricists – Exco Levi with “Dutchie Wah Food”.  Congratulations Exco!  A former Juno award winner who is nominated yet again.  Good Luck on your nomination!  Take a listen to his song, you too will be impressed.  I love the tune!  Bless Up Mr. Levi!

April 2013 Dancehall Tops

Gal A Gimme Bun Tops This Months Dancehall Charts

Topping this month’s Dancehall Chart is I-Octane’s “Gal A Gimme Bun” –  a funny tune that some of you can relate to I’m sure.  This song

was well crafted, his songwriting skills are getting better as time goes by.  This song was released in December of 2012 and now, mid April, it’s taking the world by storm!  The Dancehall Scene is still waiting for its first big riddim of the year.

Number two and number three respectively belong to Chronixx – a singjay that is sweeping our city with his chunes “Odd Ras” and “Behind Curtain”.  He is so big right now that he’s at the forefront of the Dancehall Scene – one that is usually dominated by the DJs.  Chronixx is rumoured to be coming to town next month – fingers crossed!  The rest of the chart speaks for itself, we haven’t put one out since December of last year, so enjoy!

April 2013 Reggae Tops

There seems to be no stopping Chronixx as he takes the bull by the horns.  This month’s chart features four of his songs – unprecedented in chart history!  This artist is making the traditionally more experienced artistes

seem pale in comparison.  In last month’s chart, we saw Chronixx in the top position with his hit “Behind Curtain”, this month, it fell to the number two spot – knocked down by his latest “Odd Ras”, which is one of the hottest tunes right now on the International Dancehall circuit.  He also comes in at number seven with “They Don’t Know”, and makes a new entry earning the number nine position with “Warrior” – another ‘classic’ Chronixx tune that is so highly addictive.  Macka Diamond’s “Dye Dye” and Tarrus Riley’s “Gimme Likkle One Drop” are also new entries on the chart this month.

GIMME LIKKLE ONE DROP TOPS THE CHARTS – TARRUS RILEY

In the scope of things, “Gimme Likkle One Drop” is not a new release – the video was released April 28, 2013 and the song was released December 28, 2013.  Kudos to Tarrus Riley for creating an International hit!  A

seasoned performer, he recently opened for Beres Hammond at the Toronto Redemption Reggae Festival to a Sold Out crowd.

On our homepage, we have a ‘Beat The Champ’ pole – two artistes and their chune go head to head, whoever reaches fifty votes first wins.  This song has been a contender for the last three months – go deh Tarrus!  Right now, it’s between Tarrus (Gimme Likkle One Drop) and Chronixx (Smile Jamaica), who, by the way is sitting in second on this months chart.  Shaggy and Beres occupy spot number three with “Fight This Feeling” and Chronixx returns with “Ain’t No Giving In” for position number four.

Jah Cure sits at number five with “That Girl” – this is one of our longest running songs to chart, a testament to the quality of this chune!  Busy Signal takes spot number six with “Why I Sing”, one of my favourite songs – it mixes Gospel and Reggae.

In spot number seven, Canada’s Exco Levi – a twotime Juno Award Winner with “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright”This one is special, not only does it pay tribute to the father of crossover Reggae – Bob Marley with the hook, but, it also features one of U.K.’s best in Dancehall – Gappy Ranks, one of my favorite artistes.  I like his flow and his versatility.  He, like Exco, is a very creative individual and I can’t help but think that the reason they haven’t garnered worldwide attention is because of where they live.  Still, what a great combination chune, listen and fulljoy!

Song number eight belongs to a new artiste from Africa called Jah Bouks.  He definitely has braggin’ rights on this one, a high quality chune that is silently and steadily climbing up the International charts.  Mark my words, Jah Bouks a go buss!  His song, “Angola” has a Bob Marley vibe (Soul Rebel), as the saying goes…imitation is the highest form of flattery.  This is an introductory chune, expect to hear more from him in the very near future.

Morgan Heritage has song number nine.  This song, like many of their songs, is nothing less than a classic!  The Morgan’s always have something to say, political or not, that will make you think.  They challenge themselves when it comes to writing lyrics – they keep abreast of the situations that go on in this world and use their music as their messenger.  This is how they stay relevant in the Reggae Scene today.  After seeing them perform on several occasions, I came to the conclusion that Morgan Heritage are revolutionists guided by a Black Panther spirit.

Last but not least, Freddie ‘EverReady’ McGregor – Big Up!  A man who is so very humble and down to earth, that when you keep his company, you feel that ‘family’ bond – nuh joke!  Freddie is at that stage in his career where he is one of the last few living legends alive and still relevant today.  I love “Rainbow Country”, but, I don’t know why?, it’s not usually my style.  If you like this music, listen to my show Saturday Night ReggaeMania on 100.7 CHIN-FM 10 PM.
