FEBRUARY 2001 OVERVIEW
February marked Black History Month, and the line-up of artists, sounds and entertainers visiting Toronto steadily increased. Last year (2000) in February, Toronto was host to Capleton live at the Warehouse, but an event of this magnitude was not to be held in the 2001 year. International artists performing in Toronto during February 2001 included Aaron Silk, Jahmel, LMJ, and Frankie Wilmot. While things heated up locally at the Epiphany Juggling Competition, international sounds visiting Toronto included Bodyguard, Katarock, Strikeforce, Metromedia, and Pure Playaaz. Bodyguard was packed at Epiphany, while Metromedia managed to draw less than 100 people at Base.
Even though Lenn Hammond won the Juno, we’ll still big up Juno nominees Tasha T., Glen Washington, and Lazo (last year’s winner). Dane (Union Promotion) and Shot (Slingshot from King Turbo) has a record label in the works that are now 2 years into planning. Look for things to warm up soon from the new dynamic duo. Big Ups to all the artists who won a Pictureman Lloyd Dancehall Awards this year.
February also market the debut of Milestone Radio (Flow 93.5 FM), Canada’s supposed answer to a Black Radio Station, but for a Black station, they big question still is; why only one reggae song per hour in their everyday programming?. The reggae and soca massive are disappointed and waiting for a change. On February 21st, Beenieman became the latest Grammy winner with an award for best album for Art and Life, and Bob Marley received a special Hollywood Walk Of Fame Award while his Exodus album was voted Album of The Century. New songs starting to make impact were Chi-Chi Man by T.O.K. and Sting History by Merciless.
Tribute to Bob Marley, Saturday February 10 2001
Saturday February 10, the vibes were pure in heart for the massive that braved the cold to take in the tribute to the late great king of reggae Bob Marley at the Bloor Cinema. Marley enthusiast both young and old gathered in the renovated cinema amidst Jamaican and Ethiopian flags, and other nostalgic paraphernalia.
Though bitter outside the audience was oblivious to the weather as they shanked and sang along with their favourite Bob tune. The Canadian based contingent of Jimmy Reid, Jackie James, Inspector Lenny, Mr. Cooper, and Wire were definite crowd pleasers.
The ladies of LMJ out of Jamaica had the crowd wanting more after their rendition of “Stir It Up”. Amazing performances by cultural balladeer Jahmel, and brother of the ever popular and sorely missed Garnett Silk topped off the night. Both performers brought down the house with classic Marley tunes, and selections from their debut album. The music was provided by Toronto’s own Explosion band.
On Friday February 9, Aaron Silk and Jamel, and LMJ dropped in on Reggaemania’s special African History month and Valentine’s show to give the massive a taste of what was to come at the Bob Marley tribute. Listen to the audio for more.
