Tasha T March 2002 CANADIAN ARTIST OF THE MONTH

We’ll big up Tasha T because she’s a woman playing in a man’s game and doing more than holding her own despite odds being against her making it. Tasha recently won a CRMA Award (Winston Hewit Award) for Top Canadian Female, and she recently released a 5-song mini-CD which features “In This Time” and more of her classics.

DJ Newbie March 2002 CANADIAN SOUND OF THE MONTH

Selector Newbie has won the 45 Blaze Out and one elimination round of the Epiphany Juggling Competition both in the same week! That’s a good accomplishment no matter which way one looks at it, so Newbie (Rebel Tone) get’s our selector of the month. Coming in a close 2nd is Allan Lad then the Fire Kid.

RIDDIM OF THE MONTH
  • “The Return” Riddim + “Ninja Night” Riddim

NEW DANCES OF THE MONTH
  • The new dances were talked about but not seen or performed. People are still “Loggin” on and “Driving-Riding” by. Elephant Man is pushing two new dances called “Shizzle” and “Online”.

STAGE SHOW OF THE MONTH

  • The oldies show with George Nooks (March 30th @ Howard Johnsons Hotel, Toronto) has to take our show of the month for March as this was the only stageshow in this month featuring international Jamaican artists. John Holt will not be appearing for this event.

 SURPRISE OF THE MONTH

  • More of a disappointment than a surprise, but the failure of John Holt to show at the Howard Johnson’s Oldies show (March 30th) ranks up there, although this time, fans were informed a day previous about John Holt’s no show. Bounty Killer coming to town May 16th! Rumours has it that Tony Matterhorn and Kid Kapri plus Starting From Scratch and Dr. Jay will also be part of this major show, held in separate rooms at the Guvernment (132 Queens Quay, downtown T.O.). This show seemed to come out of nowhere, and now crowds up the Kings of Kings presentation two days later of Capleton, TOK, and Elephant Man at the International Centre (6900 Airport Rd.)!

TOP MARCH 2002 NEWS STORY

The top news story of March involved a shooting at West-end T.O. nightclub called Clarendon Hideout! One 18-year old woman, Chemere Roach, lost her life when she was shot in the head by up to four thugs who had followed her and another man out of the venue after an arguement had developed between them. Another man was shot in the leg, but survived his injuries. Although some of the suspects have been apprehended, another two remain on the loose. Visit our Magazine section for more on this and other breaking news stories.

DANCE EVENT OF THE MONTH

On Saturday March 2nd @ HHMS Niteclub (1468 Victoria Park Ave., Toronto) promoter Musclehead and his 2-Lined Production gave Scarborough a unique concept clash titled “45 Blaze Out”. The well publicized no-dub plate juggling clash was supposed to feature selectors Newby (Rebel Tone), Lindo P (Heatwave), King Sharp (Desert Storm), and Fire Kid Steenie (formerly of Super Fresh), while Radication and Tasha Rozes supplied the early juggling (DJ Shortman (Star Trak) was the MC).

However, to the disappointment of both fans and promoters, Fire Kid Steenie failed to show, and everyone was left hanging as to why this was so. In the end, Lindo P. was the first sound to drop out, followed by King Sharp, leaving Newby as the only champion. Newby was the only CD-sound that night, but this wasn’t a factor, as winning this clash basically came down not only to who played the best music, but who was the best trash talker. There was excessive bragging, boasting, dissing, name calling, chatting and exposing of selector’s personal business and private life, rumour spreading, etc.

On the most part, the music was relevant to the mic talk, but the great majority of tunes were only played for their first few lines. This didn’t seem to matter however, as in most sound clashes, the people were the judge, and on this night, the judged Newbie as victor, a title well deserved based on his performance from that night. All the selectors should be congratulated for giving the people what they want, and for not being afraid of competition. Too bad Steenie can’t say the same.

Coming up a close second was Nico Bam Bam at Club Paradise Friday March 8th. The vibes were nice, and Nico played wicked despite not having the Stonelove backative! Check our Magazine section for the rest of the story!
