STONELOVE + AFRIQUE @ LOLA’s BANQUET HALL SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 1st 2001

The relatively unknown Lola’s Banquet Hall was the chosen spot inside our city’s west for a Soul To Soul promotion of Stonelove, Afrique, Soulville and Soul To Soul, each sound featuring the original veteran selectors. This dance was troubled by a lack of a proper liquor license, causing many people who had arrived at the venue to leave. Word had it the sounds still played through night’s end, despite a dry dancehall and relatively small audience.

STONELOVE + AFRIQUE @ MIRAGE NIGHTCLUB SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 2nd 2001

After a troubled Saturday night in the city’s West end, Rosa (Soul To Soul) took the exact same group of sounds to our city’s East inside Mirage Nightclub. This night was full of good vibes and a strong attendance made it easy for sounds to score with virtually every vintage selection chosen.

BODYROCK @ EPIPHANY SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 15th 2001

I wasnt’ at this dance, and didn’t feel a ways about it as Bodyrock hadn’t been making any noise lately anyway. I will be scouting for feedback so I can post a review. By this time however, the Epiphany Sunday night fever had worn off, so E would guess attendance was no more than average, about 250 – 300 people.

BLACK CHINEY @ ILLUSION CITY FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 21st 2001

I went to this dance with high anticipation but was a bit set back and puzzled as to why no more than 100 people attended. The promotion was weak, yes, but Black Chiney had come to Toronto and performed for over 600 people only two weeks back. Having said that, it was nice to see Black Chiney up close and intimate, and they didn’t seem to mind the low attendance as they proceeded to rock the crowd anyway, selector is DJ booth while the mic talker performed about 10 metres away on the stage.

Despite the distance separating these two selectors, the Black Chiney duo functioned like a well-oiled precision machine. The DJ and Black Chiney owner didn’t skip a beat, and his MC knew every tune that was coming without even glancing inside the DJ booth. Wow! These guys had their act together, and they thrilled the small Illusion City crowd without any reliance on dubs. Good for Black Chiney. Next time I hope the start earlier than 2:00 am though.
