CIUT has a variety of enriched spoken word shows and a wide mix of musical programming, and their contribution to a branded Toronto FM sound is absolute. This University of Toronto campus radio station is blessed with a powerful signal where the station can be heard clearly all through the city and its outskirts and sometimes as far as Buffalo, New York. CIUT is not a mixed format station but urban flavours have been a constant since their inception.
There was no show description on the CIUT online program guide, good thing I was able to tune in to scan the slot for myself. Reggae in the Morning is a host-less three hours of various styles and eras of reggae music delivered by computer software on shuffle mode. The slot can be best described as filler music for CIUT, and while it’s nice to hear Reggae music over our Toronto FM airwaves in any capacity, the listening experience, without a host or crew, comes off as empty and unstimulating. The music, not performed and presented by a dee-jay, fails to come off smooth and transitions are often technically and creatively conflicted. This spot was formerly occupied by the popular Morning Ride Show (beep-beep), but Reggae in the Morning fails in comparison because it’s not a show but a shuffled playlist of random reggae selections. For now, Reggae in the Morning can pass as a temporary reggae filler, but CIuT radio will have an opportunity to do more with this 3-hour slot.
Six Degrees is hosed by DJ Slam, Mlny & Dusty Wallace. This is the crew who lays down the best hidden gems and underground Hip-hop, Dub, Grime, Soul, R&B from around the world every Tuesday morning on 89.5. You also get interviews from local up-and-coming musicians and people behind the scenes. Chances are that your new favourite song was played here first. That's the CIUT show description, but listen to Six Degrees once and it's easy to get hooked. The energy is all hip-hop, you feel it from start to finish, and the music is just as good even when they stray away musically as they do it good taste. The hosts and dee-jays are music enthusiasts and that's reflected in their brave musical programming, spoken word intellect, and verbal patter.
Hosted by Mr. Pete and Dr. Mouth. Funky Fridays is a really good show featuring deep, authentic, historic and groundbreaking funk and soul to keep you happy. This is a solid radio show rich with info and the coolest stories featuring the artists behind music. If this is your music and edutainment school the you better bring your dancing shoes.
If you love variety, check out Tuesday mornings from 6 - 9 with Drill Squad, the 'best thing you'll hear at 6 am'. The CIUT Program Description describes Drill Squad as 'a party on the radio - designed to celebrate, teach and reinforce the original traditions, vibes and values of Hip-hop, sister genres and DJ culture in general'. That is an accurate summary of The Drill Squad Mix Show, one of CIUT's most popular staple shows; you get an eclectic recipe of 80’s old school house, Hip-hop, R&B and more.
CIUT SHOW DESCRIPTION: Lovers Rotation is a blend of Afrobeats and R & B with the intention of representing the diversity of soft and sweet music across the Black diaspora (and beyond). Hosted by Aysha Jawara
CIUT SHOW DESCRIPTION: Groove Concept Radio’s content mirrors the melting pot of musical genres and has carved a niche for itself as the home of Jazz, R&B, Soul, hip-hop & left-field sounds. Hosted by Emile Weekes, the show's goal is to always deliver message music, with an emphasis on lyrical content and a perfect groove. MY COMMENTS: You get beat tapping and vast musical terrains explored here, and host Emile Weeks appears to take a lot of pride in doing it creatively and artistically. It's not about the mixing here, it's about the musical diversity of the programming. Listen to Groove Concept Radio and you sometimes hear songs play out in their entirety, but there's a complete absence of poppy flavours here, and what's consistent with every show is that the music sets a mood, tempos move you and even instrumentals speak and provoke.
Broadcasting on CIUT 89.5 FM since 1989, the MasterPlan Show is one of the longest standing Hip-hop radio shows in Canada, a staple on Saturday nights, fortified by deep musical knowledge and intellectual and experienced analysis, a wide range of urban musical spectrum is explored, with a special focus on Hip-hop from past to present. Hosted by Nola Jones, PV (Philip Valiño), DJ DTS & Matthew Romeo.
CIUT DESCRIPTION: Travel the world through music without leaving your living room with host Ken Stowar. Ken has been at the forefront of the so-called World Music scene since 1988 and has been instrumental and influential in providing awareness for the underrepresented sounds and the musicians and vocalists who record them MY COMMENTS: This is an enjoyable show if you like and appreciate good world beat music, international music that's easy tap your feet to despite the language. Global Riddims feature music that allows listeners to close their eyes and visually take themselves away while able to travel through different musical worlds, all anchored by an ego-less host who while confident and secure, still appears excited and energized to share his music, stories information about the people who made it.
Music means everything to this man, which is why he has two shows on CIUT, each primarily featuring reggae music. On Wednesday from noon - 2 PM, you get Music with DB Hawkes on CIUT. DB Hawkes has held it down at CIUT for over two decades I would guess, he's a well known and respected name in the Toronto reggae radio world. But DB's musical selections go beyond reggae, he also touches Jazz, Latin, Caribbean and other international flavours.
DB is a passionate white man who is obsessed by his great vault of Black music. He himself is a vault of information and he likes to tell cool personal stories and spew provocative thoughts to keep listeners locked and edutained. He is likeable because he does so without any trace of a Ja-faican accent, and his time as a CIUT volunteer programmer shows us that he is true to his craft, not in it for the money or glory, his music and his passion defines him. DB can be a bit of a cynic, very confident and even abrasive at times, and enjoys sharing his provocative mind and enriched patter with his listeners.

Higher Ground is hosted by DJ Jason Palma. Musically, Jason needs a radio show to digest all the beautiful music he has in the crates, and it's his pleasure not to waste his gems but instead share the with his listening audience.

Want to check out one of the best Drum and Bass shows on the radio anywhere, then listen to The Prophecy, with hosts and contributors: Mr. Brown, Polaris, Valiant Emcee, T.R.A.C., MC D2, and RMS. I had to question if Drum & Bass is a true urban listening experience, but in this case because I appreciate Drum &. Bass, The Prophecy gets a pass. Contact: theprophecy@ciut.fm
Richard ‘Medicineman’ Martin is Canada’s premier global groove DJ. His sets flow seamlessly from Indo Arabic Dub to Afro Gypsy Electronica, mixing primitive rhythms with progressive beats. Host: DJ Medicineman
A musical appreciation show! Serving up new and old in abstract jazz, electronic, techno, deep house, soul, funk and anything to get you movin’! Featuring fresh new music and vinyl with a refreshing taste and vibe reminiscent of old school Sundays radio. What's consistent is that host Binny the Minx plays music reflecting not just how she feels but how she wants you to feel on any particular Friday night.
Higher Ground is hosted by DJ Jason Palma. Musically, Jason needs a radio show to digest all the beautiful music he has in the crates, and it's his pleasure not to waste his gems but instead share the with his listening audience. Jason is one of Toronto's top dee-jays, and it's only right that he can display his mixing and programming skills on the dynamic CIUT radio platform. Listen to his show and you'll be bopping your head and snapping your fingers and yes, tapping your feet to his beats, all in good taste with the DJ Jason Palma touch.

What can I say about Reggae Riddims, it may be the longest standing Reggae radio show in Toronto, and DJ-host Patrick Roots has been the ship captain from the beginning. Conscious reggae music, live interviews, intelligent and provocative commentary is a constant on Reggae Riddims. Patrick Roots always keeps things on a uplifting and progressive level with a recipe of deep roots, foundation, classics, and rare gems, sometimes even a little bit dancehall. One of CIUT's most important shows no doubt.
CIUT SHOW DESCRIPTION: Jazz, Latin-jazz, Jazz-Funk, Jazz-Fusion, SteelyDan. This is how the JazzFix rolls every week from 8 to 9pm. From 9 to 10pm - The lounge mix shifts gears into a DJ Set to round out the show. Hosts Craig Pady aka DJ Goldfinger and his brother Chris Pady have been spinning tunes since they were in diapers.
Hosted by DB Hawkes, this late night mix show is like no other. Toronto listeners can enjoy Club Ned Sundays, the only and perhaps longest 6-hr reggae show on the Toronto airwaves. DB's stash of treasured music from the vaults are satisfying, but his live event recordings are perfect for the radio airwaves, many personally recorded by DB himself.
